Is there any product that will treat aluminum similar to bluing? I know you can't blue aluminum but is there a product that will react with it to darken it up? I have a shotgun coming with some wear from steel casings on cheap shells that I'd like to treat. Paint will rub off, is there anything else on the market?

Aluminum black sort of works.... but in my experience its not very tough. Sold in the same section as cold blue in most stores.

That aluminium blackening product or just use one of the gun paints would be your best bet.

Anodizing can be done at home but to refinish an anodized part requires you to strip the existing anodizing off using a reverse electrolisis procedure, then polish or treat the base metal to the sort of final sheen or look you want and then anodize the metal, dye the resulting hard skin and then seal it by boiling the part.

I've had half decent results with a mixture of Alumablack and 44/60 (I think that's the name, it's a fraction, anyhow) on an aluminum alloy pistol frame. I also end up with a ripping headache and pink elephants dancing around the room.

I can't really recommend it.

alum

if you can strip the piece down you can get it anodized, which is very durable I have never had any gun parts done but have had lots of archery stuff down.
