Aluminum vs steel bases/rings??
Do I need steel for the recoil of 223?
Are there other benefits to steel?
I assume weight is the only drawback to steel?

What about mixing the two? ie: steel bases and aluminum rings?

Thanks from a new bolt gun shooter.

Even "soft" alum alloy bases made by Weaver have survived on millions of rifles for the last 1/2 century.

Pick the style and height that fits your needs and budget.

I have found that it is pretty easy to find a workable alum base at a low price. It is not so easy to find that with alum rings at a low price. For a 2pc, it is really hard to not get the Burris XTB 2pc steel bases. For the very small difference in price, the quality and strength seems to work for alot of shooters.

The problem is stripping the threaded holes in alum. With the cheap off shore stuff, the alloy is very weak and you can easily strip these holes.

For rings, I use the burris Sig ZEE line pretty much exclusively as they are steel, hold bolts well, and have those cool inserts that let me shim my scope as needed.

A quality Alum ring like the Burris XTR, TPS also work just fine. The alloy will take the torque needed to hold a scope in place.

Some swear by steel bases like Farrell and Near. Others do just fine with alum bases from EGW and Bench Source.

So if you stick with a quality name brand product, type of material really doesn't matter.
