Always the 5th Shot. Always.

I know I don't have a fancy LRB but my norinco does the same thing every damn time. Bang, nice, bang, nice, bang, not bad, bang, doing good, bang, goddammit.

It's most likely me, as I've done the same ting with my TRG-22 before I sold it. With each successive accurate shot, the anxiety builds until I blow it. Good times though.

Used to happen to me more than it does now. Since I started reloading my groups and consistency have improved dramatically, ymmv.

Makes you wonder what your groups would look like if you dialed your point of impact over to the next target... I do the same. My best groups are hidden in the bullseye of certain targets.

If always the 5th rd, just use a dummy rds for shot 5 and group with 4 rds.

The change in bolt cycling can and will affect your barrel harmonics... ie all other shots have the bolt close on a cartridge, last shot goes back and is locked. big change in action vibration.

Shoot 2X4rds to get your accuracy average... or 3X3rds if barrel heat is a problem. Plot where every shot goes and look for any pattern

If a pattern ALWAYS repeats, that you need too look outside the load and shooter, and diagnose a change in the machine.

May I suggest it's possibly you, no offense. I'm sure you are a great shot and a seasoned shooter, and maybe that type of rifle is prone to that same thing happening. I have similar experiences on an ongoing basis with my precision rifle. So frustrating.

It's not the gun, it's all me.

I will put four in one hole or touching, forming a pretty little group, and then shot 5 will go out on it's own somewhere. It ain't the gun, scope, or ammo, it's shooter all the way. Some bizarre head games/anxiety, I don't know, but it's real. I have tried taking a break before shot 5, I have tried shooting through as fast as I can, I have played mental games and rehearsals, I have tried being as still as possible, and the opposite, even tried visualization,... still the same.

I'm continuing to work on it and trying to feel the difference in my body to see if I can identify what is changing causing the results. I'll let you know if I come up with anything.

One day it will go away, I hope... It's still fun trying.

Should be able to top the mag during the string too shouldn't you?

No offense taken. In fact it probably is me. As mentioned earlier I've done this sort of thing with a TRG-22 before I sold it. I think my humour/sarcasm wasn't quite communicated in the tittle of this thread. It most likely is me.

However some advice given in this thread will be be put to use. I do plan on doing some research on the last shot thing with M14 rifles.
