...is this a reasonable concern? (thought i'd post this in the milsurp forum)

I have a 1950 longbranch that has a hole drilled in the receiver. After looking into getting it filled, i took the advice of another CGN'er and sent it off to Jason Spencer (gunsmith) near Ottawa. He received it nearly 3 months ago, and it is not done yet. I phoned him about a month and a bit ago to see what was going on and he said that he hadnt taken the receiver to the welders yet since he didnt want to make the trip for only one small weld job. He said he would call me when it's done.

I almost dont want to phone him again in fear of hassling him into rushing through the job, but it has been almost 3 months and i am concerned about how much longer it will be.

Any ideas? :confused:
 
Definitely call to see, but be aware that good gunsmiths are busy guys and take a long time to get through their list to your stuff. Last time I talked to Rick at ATRS he had at least a 7 month backlog and getting worse by the week.

I don't know Mr.Spencer but I had a similar experience...

I asked pretty much the same question of a gunsmith in Calgary when I was getting a bolt re-faced (spray-welded and machined). He told me he had one guy he trusted to do the job and that he charged hourly. By spreading three repairs across the hour the smith was being billed for we each saved about $50 on the repair. I don't recall exactly how long I waited but it was summer when I sent it in and winter when I got it back.

Front-of-the-line service costs $$$ you prolly don't want to spend.
 
Thats strange. Its likely that he is waiting to have a larger amount of work to send out at once.
Keep in mind, Jason is an avid hunter and may have been away for up to 4 weeks of that time.

Typically, he is very quick though.

Rest assured, you will be VERY pleased with the results, Jason does awesome work!

thanks. That's all i needed to hear. I'll probably give him a call in the new year if i havent heard from him by then. :)
 
you can get good work or fast work .............but not both.
i would be patient REMEMBER fall is as others have said a busy time due to those who do not plan ahead.

I have known Jason for more years than I can recall, simply put your get quality work at fair prices, but it can take time during hunting season.

Excellent gunsmith are a dying breed, be patient....

Where are the holes? Their should be two holes on the left side of the receiver, one right at the front, and one near the back under the stripper clip bridge (behind where the mag would sit)
