Went to the range today to test some loads.
I had a pound of IMR-4350 that have been tested for 270 and 30/06 hunting load with no success...Made a Google search for any .308 loads...
Found some that are not in any of my 3 reloading books.
I tried 3 of my varmint rifles and got 2 clover leafs @ 100 m and 1" @ 100 m
with the third one...:eek:5 Shot Groups, Don't have a chrono...But this was good.
Was using Hornady BTHP Int.Match,180 Gr.With 42Gr.IMR-4350,Norma Brass,
CCI Primers,OAL 2835.
Anybody try this before???

Amazing Groups = Amazing Grace.........run with it!

On a serious note.........a testiment to match grade bullets and scandinavian drilled flash holes (opposed to punched & burred flash holes).........now add some match grade primers and...........thou shalt be cook'ng with freak'ng gas.

Try some 168 grain match bullets with IMR4064. Just remember that match grade bullets are not suitable for hunting. Use a 165 grain hunting bullet with IMR4064 for that.

With a 180 gr bullet, a load of 42 grs of 4350 will produce about 2300 fps. I believe that 4350 is a little slow in the .308 until bullet weights exceed 200 grs., so 4895 or 4064 might show better results.

I'm not sure what kind of accuracy you are expecting from a hunting rifle, but it has been my experience that 4350 produces very good results in both the .270 and .30-06. To my way of thinking, a hunting rifle should produce good accuracy without having to resort to voodoo reloading techniques or recipes. If it is difficult to find a load that shoots well in that rifle, there might be some issues that need to be resolved. What the rifle does once is not the issue, what you can do with it on demand is what matters.

Match bullets have no place in big game hunting, although they are fine for varminting in areas where ricochets do no present a hazard. But, when considering a big game bullet, the bullet's terminal performance trumps accuracy. With good quality hunting bullets, you should not have a problem grouping 1.5 MOA with 3 shots. This level of accuracy will keep you on an 8" target probably much farther than you should shoot - farther than I will shoot at big game anyway. Once your hunting rifle produces this level of accuracy get off the bench. Shoot from field positions, at different ranges and in different wind conditions, and keep a log of the results. You will discover very quickly how far you can shoot at a live target with a reasonable expectation of success.

Well stated. We seem to focus on accuracy from the bench, but none of the animals that have fallen to my shot, have asked me what kind of groups I get off of the bench. I am more concerned with putting 2 quick ones on target from snap @ 100. That is real world hunting accuracy IMHO. I do have target rifles that have never seen the field and I hold those rifles/loads to a higher standard. BTW, my .30-06 load is sub-MOA at 100. But the deer still don't care, cuz they be dead.

amazing groups

I heard somewhere the SMKs are not suited for hunting game.
My 200 gr SMKs at 3000 fps (300 wea. mag) do fine on deer ....
Of course you don't want to shoot thru branches.
