Well, my wife and I got a buck on Monday morning, and I had kind of figured that was it until the muzzle loader season, but yesterday morning, my trigger finger got too itchy. Around 8:30, a doe came out at well over 100 yards. I watched her in the cut, hoping she would turn my way, but she headed towards the thick stuff. I fired one shot, offhand, but missed. She ran a ways, and slowed to a walk. I had time to kneel and rest my Savage on the tree stand rail, and squeezed off a second shot, at around 140 yards (I will measure exactly with my rangefinder in the next while). Anyhow, she jumped up, turned, and took a jump into the bush. When I walked over, I was amazed to see that there was a big spray of blood for about 10-15 feet. The doe traveled about 25 feet and crumpled up, both lungs mangled. Unbelievable performance.from those 260 gr. bullets.

I have used these for the last few years in 12 gauge, they really crumple the deer up and shoot very well.

This is the 6th or 7th deer I've taken with them, but this one was the most spectacular. The blood spray is something I would have expected (and have seen) from a belted magnum. I never would have thought it would perform that way at such a range. She was completely drained of blood. How does the old Monkees song go "I'm a believer!" ?

I used to have a Savage 20 gauge bolt gun that loved those. A very accurate slug.

That's what I have - a model 220. With anything but those Accutips, accuracy is minute of deer, although the Hornady's aren't bad. But what blew me away was the way that bullet performed. The only time I had seen something similar (but much more drastic) was when my son shot a small doe with his 300 RUM and a 180 gr. at about 50 yards. That was scary! I've gotten several through the heart and/or lungs, but this time, it sprayed blood in a 10-15 foot semi-circle. Let's just say I am frikkin' amazed. I would not have expected that out of my 45-70 or 308, maybe my 300 WM.

I predict the 12 gauge will practically be obsolete in the slug gun world in the near future. With modern loads there is really no point in carrying a heavier and harder kicking 12.

Other than the fact that everyone owns one, I might agree. But since 12 is the most popular gun by far it will never go obsolete

Doubtful, everyone seems to own one or more than one 12g shotgun, personally I’ll only ever own a 12g. It does it all and I have no need for any other caliber in a shotgun, I’m sure I’m not the only one out there that feel the same.

I've often thought the 28 would make a perfect slug gun - smaller, lighter frame than the 20, yet you could load the same bullet to the same velocities. I don't know why they haven't done that yet - unless there is a 20 ga. minimum in a lot of states?

Considering the recent trend of more 12 and less 20 gauge sabots being in stock the last couple years, people are definitely moving to the 20 rather quickly. Local gun stores and conservation officers are noticing this trend too.

Maybe the 20 just hasn't taken hold out west yet? For deer it is far better than the 12 for multiple reasons.

I just got the savage 220 20ga this year as well, I'm eager to try it out on a deer for the december controlled hunt. I'm using the new remington barnes expander sabot 2 3/4 load, shoots really well in mine and supposed to have great terminal performance. My gun did not shoot 3" that well in either expanders or accu tips.
