Hi folks,

I've been shooting for some time and have been saving my brass like a good little boy should. I shoot tons of .9mm, .38 spl, 45ACP and .223. I have been buying the cheaper American Eagle ammo. Lately I have been considering buying bricks of Winchester ammo which is a little more expensive than the Eagle stuff.

My question: I intend to get into reloading in the future - would it make sense to buy the Winchester brand ammo at a .75 more per box (say for .45 ACP) or is the brass all the same for these two manufacturers?

I have a feeling that I will be shooting a heck of a lot more once I start reloading given some of the comments on this board - oh well :p

For 'generic' grade ammo, you likely won't notice much difference.

The difference comes if you buy match grade ammo and reload the cases, at least that's what I've found.

In my own experience, I find all the brands of brass easy to work with, it's just that the match grade stuff is a little more consistent from case to case.

Federal used to be very desireable for pistol brass. Thier reputation tanked because of some very soft rifle brass that would puke up primers regularly.

For pistol use, I wouldn't worry. For rifle use, stay away. Thier .223 Rem has been getting better, but.........

For .45 brass, I haven't had any issues with either brand.
Keep in mind there is some being manufactured with small pistol primers now.
I've been having a bugger of a time getting the small primmered .45 brass to re-prime in my 550.

I personaly do not care for federal brass but the winchester winclean 45 auto stuff with small primer pockets I have no use for at all, other 45 auto has large primer pockets.

Thanks for all the info folks. I was surprised to see how quickly I got the answers I needed. Nice to know all those thousands of empty casings I've been hoarding won't be put to waste. Cheers!
