Not exactly light fluffy reading, but a detailed breakdown of how to build the old 03, plus brief chapters at the end on the Lewis, P17 etc. Hard to find book normally, god bless the Internet Archive

M1903 production was simplified in WW2 with the introduction of the 03-A3 Model made by Remington and Smith-Corona. In the interests of increased production this model featured less machining on the receiver as well as extensive use of stampings incl the trigger guard/magazine assembly and stock hardware. Most 03-A3 production also used 2 groove barrels which proved to be as accurate as the earlier 4 groove type. The 03-A3 also featured an aperture rear sight which corrected one of the big shortcomings of the earlier M1903 model.

"...how bloody complex it was..." Machined parts until the '03A3. Remington started working on simplifying production as soon as the got the contract.
"...was 30lb with..." The Lewis was a first generation LMG. The BAR weighed 20 pounds empty.
