Is there any good online links/pictures that show 30 caliber ammo can identification? I have one here I am unsure what it is from as far as cartridge and age go. It says .30 cal M1 but then it says a bunch of painted stuff on it indicating is was belted. Any ideas? I was kinda hoping for something to match up with the Garand..

.30 M1 ammo is the ammo the M1 Rifle was designed to shoot. It had a 174.5 grain, gilding metal jacketed, BT bullet at 2647 FPS, 48,000 PSI, 5500 yards max range. Adopted in 1925. Originally developed to be used in machine guns shooting at long range. (W.W. I tactics used MG's as a form of artillery.)
It's the ammo that proved to have too much range for U.S. National Guard ranges and was replaced with .30 M2 ammo in 1938. It was used by the Regular U.S. Army, for a while though.
There are some pictures of .30 M1 and .30 M2 ammo cans here.

There is the info I was looking for. Thankyou. I have a boatload of clips for the Garand and was planning on packing the ammo into the clips and into a sort of period correct container. I think that should work fine unless you guys have a better idea?
