Fodder for a Ruger 10/22- Any suggestions?
I have recently acquired a plain jane 10/22, circa 1988, in mint condition. Light weight barrel about 18.5" in length.

I do not expect it to be a tack driver but is there any preferred ammo with the 40 gr. bullet, either standard velocity or higher?

The ammo must be freely available, e.g. Winchester, Remington, CCI or similar brands.

Suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks,

Mine will feed just about everything made. I use Remington, Blazer, Winchester Wildcat, but CCI Stingers seem to work best.
 
I have had consistent results with all of my 10/22s shooting American Eagle 38 grain. I know it is a bit lighter than you're looking for but it feeds and shoots reliably and it's easy to find. And it's HP so it's pretty decent on gophers and rabbits too!

Mine will eat anything I feed it, but it seems to like CCI the best.

Actually, I've been having good results with 36 gr. Winchester Xpert Hp's lately. Quarter sized groups out of a stock 10/22 at 25 yards. Should improve even more now that the optic is firmly attached (it was shifting around before, for some reason it wasn't gripping the rail, a few slivers of a coke can and voila, nice and solid. ;))

Mine seems to like the AE 38gr plated HP. Kills gophers well.
 
Choice of Ammo for my 10/22 carbine

Thank you all for this info. I will be going out this week end and having a go with what I have on hand.

Since buying this rifle, I have been spending a lot of time reading up on the 10/22 and all that can be donme with it.

I can see that the bolt release must be modified. As yet, I have not taken it down and so have no idea how difficult it is to get this part out. I am aware of the sticky and perused it a lot as well as joinded Rimfire Central.

Real easy, just take your time. I couldn't believe I pissed around with mine the old way for so long.

As for what works, I like to shoot whatever I can get my hands on that is cheap. I don't use it for bullseye shooting, it is a fun gun. (but has also popped the odd partridge. ;))
 
mine gobbles up bricks of American Eagle. it friggen loves the stuff. i hates Winchester Super X, but will swallow Winchester Dynapoints with the odd grimace. it'll take Remington Thunderbolts, and likes CCI as well.
 
I use American Eagle and Federal and my rifle feeds both very well. Whatever you do, never, never, never use Remington Thunderbolt ammo in your 10/22. That stuff is absolute garbage!!!!
 
Mine also eats anything you feed it. I prefer the Winchester 333 packs from Wally World for every day mass shooting and the CCI Stingers if I want the shot to count. Blazers & Mini Mags are also good.
 
I've put CCI (mini mags and subsonics), Winchester (333, xpert and dynapoints), Federal (525 pack,510 and 710), American Eagle 40 grain solids, Lapua and SK+ through my new 10/22 Target with no problems at all except a gawd awful trigger, that will be remedied tomorrow with a new Kidd 2 stage trigger assembly. As far as accuracy Lapua, SK+, AE and then CCI subs in that order.
 
Humh, my 10/22 fires remington thunderbolts no problems, in fact i prefer the remingtons because they are much cleaner rounds than most (less lead on your fingers).
