:D Many years ago I started buying up everything I could afford to at U.S and Cdn. gun shows . I tried to buy more than I could shoot . Now I have stuff like 1000's of rounds of Lake City Match, Dominion Arsenals (1960's), IVI, IVI match, IMI, Portuguese, South African, etc., .308, .223, 9mm etc.
The cost now is double and even triple what I paid. ( NO - I am NOT selling any ! - A lot of it is now unavailable, mutual funds and real estate have almost the same return:p )
The reason for this post - Seems a reluctance to pay todays unreasonable prices. Ammo prices WILL continue to skyrocket.
Bottom line - buy it ALL up now - so you can shoot cheap in future. 50 cents a round now is better than 2 bucks a round in future -;)

sure. rush out and hoard it, but don't use it. lol

Come on. Seriously. "Many years ago" "double even tripple". Either your definition of many years ago is much much shorter then mine, or you ask for much less in an investment than I do.

Howdy

I will add my 2 cents to this post.

When I go out and buy ammo, I usually buy it by the case. 1000 rounds is a minimum amount to buy. Several years ago, when I bought my garand, I went looking for large amounts of .30-06 ball. I would mention to someone, during a discusion about guns, that I was looking for .30-06.

"Go to Canadian tire."
"I want a case of ball, not a box of soft points!"
"oh, what's the difference?"
:rolleyes::runaway:

Tell people you buy ammo by the 1000, they think your nuts.

Say you want to sell 750 rounds of "whatever" because you found something that shoots better in your gun, and you get, " I'll buy a box or two, but I don't need 750 rounds."

WTF

Why do people think so small?

Funny now some of those that thought I was out to lunch, pester me to sell them stuff now, because they can't find it anymore . Ha Ha;)

I used to have a subscription to Shotgun News.
I live close to the US border, so I would buy ammo by the case, and have it shipped to Blaine WA. Then I would bring it back, pay the duty, and good to go.
Of course, this was all before someone flew a plane into a building and changed everything.
Anyway, for old corrosive surplus ammo in 303, 8x57, etc, I used to pay on average about US$ 100 per 1000. Thats 10 cents per round. By the time exchange, duty and GST was factored in, it was about 15 cents Can.

Also, I used to go to a big gun show in WA. There was a remanufacturor of ammo there. You bring 1000 fired cases tor trade in, and get a 1000 reloads of 9mm for $115, or 223 for about $145 (I forget exactly)

It just kills me to see the prices now.

Oh yeah, I once got some mixed headstamp corrosive loose packed 303 for US $70 per 1000!

AAH - The good old days - Still have em in my closet - until I shoot em up that is :D:D:D

Well the ammo hoarders probably paid less a box than what you can reload it for...not to mention the time factor.

The only problem I am finding with it is this......I have a ton of handgun ammo that I got for cheap. When I get ready to go to the range, I say to myself, well I can shoot 4 boxes of calibre A at $20 or 4 boxes of calibre B at $80.....guess which one goes to the range with me.... Actually, I ended up selling the other calibres cause I can't bring my cheap b*stard self to spend the extra money on the currently priced ammo, when I've got so much of the cheap ammo hoarded away :)

yep yep

I stopped reloading when I discovered I could buy milsurp for close to the same price. But my closet will be empty in 5 or 10 years so I am gonna start hoarding reloading supplies so I will be ready ;)

Same for me. The components cost far more than milsurp, especially for .303 slugs. Probably about $18 per 100 for hunting SP bullets for .303

Depends on the calibre of course.
As there is not much in the way of military surplus 340 Weatherby or 458 WinMAg, yes you will probably save a lot by reloading.
However, as noted above...

Sure ammo was "cheap" back in the "good old days", I still have plenty of it, but I worked cheap then too. I was able to buy guns and ammo back then, but it was mostly relative to my disposable income. I make a way more money now, and ..... guess what?? Guns and ammo are still "cheap", if I use the same cost of guns and ammo to income ratio as I did back then. I have some 8mm stuff I ordered thirty some years ago from SIR. Geez, it still looks good enough to eat!! Every once in a while, I dump out a box ot two and just run my fingers through the pile and pick it up. Ahhhh..... I buy lots now if I find some nice stuff. One of my stand-by sayings, "There are two things you never want to run out of in life - a$$wipe and ammunition!!" :p:p
