it might be a stupid question but i just got a norinco m305 and i don't know much about rifles ( i only got my pal 6 months ago and i'm more into shotguns ans pistols) ,
i saw that the m14 uses 7.62 mm ammo
i think i read it was 7.62 x 51

i would like to buy some surplus ammo crates and was wondering if other sizes like 7.62m x 39 or somethign else could be used

i know that i can use .308 aswell

so basically what knid of ammo should i buy if i want something cheap for plinking?

Try your local shops for some cheap South African 7.62NATO ammo...it will be in big brown cases, or if you buy by the package it is in brown rubber waterproof pouches. It is pretty decent stuff to shoot, but it is Berdan primed.

no, you can't use 7.62x39- for one thing, russian 7.62 is DIFFERENT than 7.62 NATO in diameter, for another the case is too short- now allow me to get technical for a minute- the 7.62 used in the m14, fn, whatever is .308 inch diameter- the russian is .311 or so diameter- the case length is 51 millimeters, and the russian is 39 millimeters- while it would fit insofar as the case length is concerned, the case would break as there's nothing supporting the shoulder- the shoulder of the case uses the shoulder of the chamber for support, so they HAVE to be the same length- ie 51 mm- firing a 311 bullet even if you could get the cases to match would SWELL your barrel if not blow it up- either get 7.62x51 nato surplus or 308 win and NOTHING ELSE-
WHO EDUCATES THESE GUYS?

Alex, welcome to the club!

You asked a very simple question that goes to heart of our hobby. We live (and die) by measurements and an understanding of engineering. Knowing millimeters and calibers (hundredths of a inch), and how cartridges and bores are measured if just the tip of the knowledge iceberg.

In essence, .308 Winchester and 7.62x51 are identical cartridges. There are differences in names and some argumentative souls will shout loudly that they are not interchangeable. Welcome to the other part of our hobby - differences of opinion. I shoot both cartridges in rifles with both chambers; I'm not dead yet and I have never felt the least reason to be concerned enough to stop.

For the record, the case for 7.62x39 is thirty-nine millimeters long and that of the 7.62x51 is fifty-one millimeters long. They have different head diameters too, so other than the same diameter bullet these are very different cartridges.

For shooting, commercial .308 Winchester 150 grain (that's the bullet weight in a third measurement system) ammunition will work just fine in your M14S. Military surplus ammunition is getting scarce and it isn't always worth the money.

Hay I live in montreal and if you wan't save money and get better groups start reloading. You can buy equipment at Higgson Powder which is about 45min from Montreal. you can relaod ammo for less then milsurp sells for.

"...Military surplus ammunition is getting scarce..." It's already scarce.
"...wondering if other sizes..." No.
"...some argumentative souls will shout loudly that they are not interchangeable..." Yep. Despite the fact that before there was an Internet, they interchanged completely with no fuss. Mind you, there were no match barrels with tight chambers then. M305's don't have match chambers.

alright thanks alot for the info, again it's not that easy to find all this kind of information, especially that i have basically no friends with guns, i shoot alone and don't really have any partners in this hobby

again i was almost sure i knew the answer to the question but it was better to confirm it here!
