For those of you who got the czech surplus 7.62x39 does it smell?? I took it out of the case to throw in my cabinet and the smell is horrible, it smells like paint and its so strong that it gave me a headache within 5 minutes...

followup question: i dont rememeber the answer to this :( does the ammo has to be locked up for storage purposes?

cased military ammo has an " paint thinner' type smell because it is added to keep the case and ammo from rusting.

Propellant when manufactured is done with a number of solvents. Depending on the country of origin, different solvents are used. As ammunition increases with age, these solvents have a tendency to leach from the propellant. If the ammunition was kept for 50 years in cool, dry, sealed conditions, performance would only be minorly degraded. I use high explosives at work that were manufactured in 1952 a dozen times a year that still function as intended.

As for painting of the ammunition boxes yes, thinner is added to the paint prior to application but it has nothing to do with the smell on opening.
