6.5x55, or 270 Winchester, would work fine for both energy and velocity wise I’m sure. 500 yards is a long poke for a big game animal, but can obviously be done under the right conditions. I prefer half that distance, or less, for my skill set :)

There isn't much difference. The case is so similar that one can be made out of the other. Bullet weights overlap a bit; but you can go considerably heavier in the .264 but since you're talking only 4-500 and wolf and deer I wouldn't worry about that. .007" in diameter is about the thickness of a piece of scotch-tape. I reckon that the .264 was Winchester's answer to the .257 in the first place.

It could come down to how you feel about free-bore or which rifle you want.

257 because that's what I use..... But realistically you're not going to notice a helluva lot of difference between the two for your purposes. Ever look into 6.5-300 Weatherby? :stirthepot2:

I've witnessed deer shot at 400 yards with a .243 Winchester if you want to save a little money on guns and ammo..... :p

264 mag. Diameter difference is small, weight difference is not.

I bought some 264 mag dies from wholesale when they closed for cheap. Never really intended on keeping them, but the longer they sit there the more I want to get a rifle for them...

Im rebarreling my 2506 with a longer heavier barrel my buddy is looking for a rifle that out paces my 2506. He got bored of his 270 and we were batting around ideas and these two seemed to be top picks. It may also be used in an area where no greater than 275 can be used for small game.

I voted the 264 as I am a Winchester fan and at this time I think there will be better bullets becoming available in the 6.5 caliber.
A 26" stainless barrel on a Model 70 action, Fiberglass, Kevlar stock topped with a 6-24X scope sound about right.

If he really wants to out pace your 2506, he should look at a 6.5x300wby if he must have a factory gun. If wildcats are acceptable then the list becomes endless...
