I'm on the board of directors for my local shooting range and I'm toying with various ideas that I can suggest to the board to liven up our 1000m range.

One thing I would like to see would be a PRS style barriacade on the range. Has anyone on here built one? Wood would be the easiest solution but it's vulnerable to the elements and people might decide to staple targets to it. Has anyone tried building anything similar out of that plastic decking material? I would also like to build something that is light enough to be moved to different distances on the range but steady enough once in position.

Another idea that shouldn't be too challenging would be to build a roof-like structure to shoot off of to simulate being on the roof of a house for example.

I really want to avoid building anything ramshackle that will fall apart or rot over time and just turn into garbage on the range.
 
If you are worried about people stapling targets to it, and weather resistance, pressure treated lumber and a thin layer of sheet metal nailed in front of it will last well and discourage people from stapling targets to it. Plastic decking is easily triple the price of regular lumber, and still can be easily stapled into.
 
Concrete block and mortar should do it. Build a low wall with 8" block with three different height staggered sections (prone, kneeling, standing heights).

There are specs for the skills stage barricade in the PRS manual. There are a lot of other challenging things you can build that make shooting interesting and won't fall apart.

Some of these aren't quite so portable but they certainly would be easy to build. The good news that the range has a spot that would allow for 300m-400m shots as well as 700m shots. It's basically two "square" ranges, one with a 600m backstop and another backstop to the left and 400m further back.
 
This could be a whole new thread but what are you folks using for targets?

I've got a couple of AR500 targets that work well. Has anyone tried "the last stand" or know where to get them? Rebar is easy to come by, is durable, and "the last stand" would make for very portable target frames.

The frame isn't as important as the connection method. The best thing we've found for hanging them is conveyor belt. Eventually it gets shot up but it lasts a lot longer than chain or cable. What we also do it have it hang lower than the bottom of the gong. We then put a stripe of orange paint on the belt above and below the gong. This lets us still see where the gong is when all of the paint has been shot off.
 
I built a portable barricade out of 3/4" plywood.It utilizes our range target stands. I based it off the VTAC barricade.
If you are worried about weather, give it a coat of paint and/or use pressure treated plywood.
It fits in the trunk of a car for easy transport.





 
Google 6.5Guys barricade, they have a nice barricade blue print. I build mine so it is easy to take down and transport but it could very easily be made as a permanent fixture.

I like the tank trap one. Might have to make one for my upcoming match.
