Hey guys, as the title states, here's a true 1 of 1 (good or bad).
I picked up a UBS rail a while back at an auction. I assumed it was for an 870 as that's all I thought was available. Upon inspection it appears to have been a prototype Mossberg unit that was never completed. I'm not sure how it showed up here but I figured I should do something with it.
The tang safety seemed to be the biggest issue to overcome in this format, but the 88/Maverick has a crossbolt so it seemed the best option for my project. They're also dirt cheap so it's not the end of the world if I bubba it...
It took some minor fitting but I got it to seat cleanly and was able to drill/tap the receiver to mount it. I found a 14" 590 barrel, a little long for a UBS but that seems to be the shortest Mossberg barrel that's possible to get now. I had the mag tube threaded to take a Mossberg end cap instead of the screw and added a +1 cap. This also required a shorter action tube. I don't like the one piece 88 grip so I modified a magpul MOE to fit on the shorter tube. It's kind of odd that no one seems to make a jumbo safety button for the 88 so I whipped one up quick and inletted the guard to fit.
All in all, it turned out well. It'd be nice if the barrel were shorter but it's still relatively light due to the receiver being aluminum. It throws the weight off the Rifle it's mounted on obviously, but is still a lot of fun. A mini-shell insert and she's ready to rock!
