While browsing the web, I found an NRA article here: ht tp://www.castpics.net/subsite2/ClassicWorks/NRA%20Cast%20Sup1.pdf Scroll down to page 10 and read how a Mr. James Walsh, in 1978, broke a 77 year old record of shooting 10 consecutive cast bullets into a .521" group. The previous record was set in 1901 with a 10 shot group of .727" @ 200 yards. Note that these groups were shot in "shoulder to shoulder" competition. Breech loaded cast bullet, the same brass case re-primed and re-charged over and over for the 10 shots, and all completed in 15 minutes.

That web site has some really great old school reference material - free for downloading.

There are still a few groups in America shooting what is known as Schuetzen Benchrest which only allows single shot rifles and plain based cast bullets. (ASSRA, ISSRA, and WSU ). To be at all competitive, ten shot groups need to be under 1 moa at 200. The max possible score is a 250 which requires ten shots in 1-1/2" at 200. It was recently done with aperture sights and a traditionally stocked rifle using a .25-20 SS cartridge.

That is an interesting article. I feel it's too bad that a focus on skill and knowledge has given way to "I want/have the coolest rifle!" or worse "I've read the latest newest thing so let me tell you why I am now an expert.".

And I think that attitude is spread way too far and way too wide, across so many issues and disciplines, in our world today. It's not just affected shooting sports.

Cheers,
Neil

PS
Now I feel like a grouchy old man. Ah, screw it. :-}

There have been guys hammering at that 200yd record regularly, biggest issue is still wind, even shooting a 250 on the Coors/ASSRA target. Fun watching the bullets in the spotting scope too, I've spotted for a few guys shooting 249's that were just out strictly on location of the group and an inexplicable wind puff.
