Hey guys,

My next purchase WILL be an STI. We've had lots of others, so no need to reply with "Just get a Sig/Glock/HK/whatever", as we've probably got one or two.

Anyway, I've gotta make a decision here in the next month or two, of whether I want the Tactical 4.15, or the Edge.

Calibre wise, 9mm is my choice. The Edge would be blued.

Before I get into my advantages/disadvantages, here's the pictures, for those of you not in-the-know.

The Tactical is pretty cool, with it's matte bluing on everything, as well as the low profile snag free sights. The light rail is neat option, but I think I'm done with tac-lights. Who knows, though. Everything's black, definately a plus. The only disadvantage of the Tactical is the shorter sight radius. I know about the 5" model, and I'm not interested. I love the look of the full dust covers.

The Edge is deep blued, with some stainless accessories. The match sights are pretty nice, but certainly not snagproof. The longer sight radius is a plus. All the stainless accessories could be replaced w/ blued ones by an STI Certified Armouror. If I wanted it to be extra tacticool, I could even parkerize it.

I'm split w/ indecision. I've got time to mull it over, and you know I'll be mulling a lot over anything worth $2200.

I'm drawn to the tactical because of it's cool accessories, but drawn to the Edge because of the longer slide and barrel. I don't know what to do, so I want your guys' opinions.

I want both for different reasons:
Edge - great IPSC gun, probably easier to shoot due to the longer sight radius and added weight
Tactical - looks awesome, love accessory rails, and love the small size for the LCF.
In the end, buy both :D

get an edge in .40, unless your heart is set on a tactical rail. I never use the rail on my HK. Unless you get a light it is useless.
You want a dark pistol for sure? if not, get the executive, fully dressed and very nice for a few dollars more.....

Musky and maurice have a good point - why stick to 9mm ? 40SW is my personal fav and if you ever want/need to resell it, I am guessing it would be easier to sell a 40SW Edge rather than a 9mm Edge...

Since you're talking 9mm, recoil management is not much of an issue. It will be light in the tac, and non-existant in the Edge.

(I and a friend shot a tac 4.15 vs. an Edge in 40 - considered shooting one in IPSC competition - the tac 4.15 does kick more than the Edge - target to target would be faster, but the loss in time on a double tap was nasty.)

The Edge comes with Bomar type sights, the Tac comes with fixed but you can get the new STI tactical adjustable sights (like the ones standard on the legacy) put on them, so sight options are out of the picture.

That leaves the rail and the length - now we're talking personal preference.

In this case, I'd pick the coolness factor and go Tac 4.15 :D

I Would go Edge, but I might be biased as I just bought one. I opted for the two tone though.

I dont like blued because all the ones I see that are a couple years old and been used a fair amount have the finish wearing. and I just hate that.

If you buy the Edge from phoenix range they put the fiber optic site on, and its no catch (or looks to be) and doesnt add to the cost of the gun.

Maybe its just me, but being that you cant carry it here I dont understand putting the tac light on.

Hey Pave, weren't you considering IPSC down the road? Either Gun is great for that although the Edge does have the...edge? Reconsider 9mm though, shooting minor in standard blows. .40 is way more versatile, burn off a few mags in my .40 Edge if it helps your decision!

If you have no intention in shooting your new purchase in IPSC, then Tactical 4.15 all the way!!

Dave

Dave, we're going shooting this weekend. As I understand it, Geoff has already invited you to try the UMP. I would love to shoot your Edge!

Everyone, my main reason for 9mm over .40 is that we have around 4000 rounds of 9mm, and under 100 of .40

But, that being said, we're getting all of that 9mm from a friend of ours, who could probably just as easily get .40

I'll give him a shout before I buy, of course.

Freedom, those adjustable tactical sights are actually really ugly. :) Does STI sell the fixed as on the tactical seperately? I could certainly tactical-ize the Edge, if I decide I love Dave's.

edge in 40 with out a doubt , if your going to run with the big dogs, why not be in the front.

Edge,

Do I sense just a hint of bias? :)

I'm leaning more towards the Edge now...... I really don't know. I suppose this weekend will help.

I really do like the forward cocking serrations.

The only other STI pistol that I'd consider, other than the 4.15 and Edge, would be the Range Master. But then I'd have to tactical the #### out of it, just like the Edge.

Oh, to tactical-ize the Edge, it'd cost the following:

$118.80 for the Fixed sight set
$59.40 for the Blue Ambi thumb safety
$35.57 for the Blue Grip Safety

I couldn't find a blued hammer on their site. Ohwells.

Another couple of pics of the Tactical:

I guess this is a double post, but ohwells.

So I've been sitting around on sleepless nights, tossing ideas back and forth in my head. In the event that I decide to get an Edge (Leaning that way right now), there's some changes I'd like made. Freedom, help out as best you can (Thought I'd ask you before I shot an email to them.):

I'd be looking to Tactical-ize an Edge. Here's the prices (US Dollars):

Edge .40 - $1874
Fixed STI Rear Sight (Novak, 2 Dot Tritium) - $30
Blue Ambidextrous Thumb Safety - $45
Blue Grip Safety - $26.95

As compared to the parts which come with the Edge:
Adjustable STI Rear Sight (Bomar) - $52.50
Stainless Ambidextrous Thumb Safety - $45
Stainless Grip Safety - $28.45

So it's cheaper for the blued parts. I don't think the factory would have a problem with that...

But, to further my tacticalization, would it be possible to get the Edge finished in Matte Blue, as the Tactical is finished? What would be the added cost of such a finish?

Thanks guys,

Brad
