I am developing an unhealthy interest in tactical carbines fellas. Might be a new project coming on one of these days.

In any event I was Youtubing and I wish I had the link for ya - I will have to track it down at some point.

It looked like the guys were doing IPSC except with AR carbines and it looked like a hoot. One fella was training the others was showing how to do mag swaps with blinding speed - an when he dumps the mag it literally flies the same way ejected brass does! Is there a trick to this? Are there ways to spring load the mag dump to eject empty mags with that kind of force? When this guy dumped a mag it literally flew several feet!

Does anyone know where they do these kind of events in Alberta?

Watch the "Art of Tactical Carbine II" DVD. At one point Chris Costa specifically explains that there is no trick to it, and just the centrifugal force of the carbine being rotated to do a chamber check is what tosses the mag the way it does.

Better yet, try it. I can get the mag to fly the same way out of Beretta CX4 Storm, and I definitely am not doing anything fancy.

Define "unhealthy".

do you...

1. do you find you rather curled up on chair right beside your gun safe at night than to sleep in the same bed as your wife\girl friend\lifestyle partner?

2. do you find yourself forming your mashed potato in the form of a AR at the dinner table?

3. do you recite the different version of the AR to put yourself to sleep?

4. everytime you open up the fridge do you wonder in your head how much ammo you can fit in there?

5. everytime you see a pretty girl walking down the street you imagine just much more ###ier she would look if she was carrying a rifle.

6. every stick, pole and handle you pick up, the thought of putting a set of rails on there crosses your mind.

I formally object to number 5 being on the list, i think its perfectly healthy to imagine that in your head.

No, I am not mentally ill like you sorry lot...I have just reached the limits of the old lady's patience! If I come home with another gun she is liable to shove it down my gullet and pull the trigger!

No doubt, the fuggin liberal moron judging the case will rule it to be a justifiable homo-cide too. :(

Question: I can see a guy doing a chamber check if he is going to clear the gun and put it down or take it out of play so that the guys can go downrange to check targets, or the range officer is closing down the range etc...but in the vid he just slapped in another one and started firing again. Is this 'flip' thing common? Do you guys do it?

I am figuring a guy might want to invest in some of those cheap plastic mags that are all the rage these days if he is going to throw them around like that.

The place you'll get to play at what you're seeing in the video link is IPSC rifle or 3-gun competitions. Either that, or join the Forces :p

A lot of practical shooters do a little seesaw flic of the weapon to toss the empty mag out to the side so it doesn't land underfoot and cause you to trip over it. Been there, done that, not fun.

The point of the chamber check is that the rifle has stopped firing, so the first thing you do is check for a stoppage. If there is no stoppage the only logical explanation for the problem is that the mag is empty. So you insert a full mag and continue firing. When in a gun fight the last thing your thinking about I'm sure is counting your shots. Especially when not limited to five rds like us lowly Canadian citizens.

And I wouldn't call the Magpul Pmags "cheap plastic", the pros use them fro a reason.

Here is the logic: the gun stopped firing. You don't know why. You think that it's because you're out of ammo, but it might be because there is a double feed. So you do a chamber check before you slam in a fresh mag, since if it's a doublefeed, you need to do something else - lock the bolt back, rip the mag out, then rack numerous times to clear the doublefeed. Most of the time mag will be locked in place in case of a doublefeed, but it might fall out, so just checking if the mag drops free is not a good policy either. So by doing chamber check you know that it's safe to feed a fresh mag in.

As for "do you guys do it?"....

You decide for yourself. Do you like what Chris Costa shows? If yes, and if you want to be as good as he is, the only way you can is through practice and emulating what he does until understanding comes.

Realistically, given thousands of rounds of ammo and many days of practice, it is possible to be just as good as Chris Costa is. He freely admits that he makes mistakes and that he's human.

I try to do what he does with correction for a different carbine platform. Some things transfer directly, some need adjustment. But yes, I do chamber checks now before every reload.

There is a strange coincidence that those cheap plastic mags are Magpul p-mags, and Chris Costa is a director of training at Magpul Industries.

Now, the question some people ask is: Is he tossing those mags around because he is selling the mags and this is part of a sales pitch, or is the fact that the mags can be tossed like this enable him to be more efficient?

Your milage may vary, but my money is on him using the tools at hand to maximum potential.

Numbers 2 and 4 apply to me... I also like to take my AR in the tub with me, and in the shower as well... Do I have a problem?
