The new law states that you have to be an active member of a range to own restricted firearms.

What actually happens if, for example, I decide I want to take a break from shooting and don't renew my membership? Huge fine? Prison?

The law states that the range has to report you if you don't have a valid membership at the time of renewal, again, what are the consequences for this?

This law is totally stupid imo, but then again, so are the people voting them.. :jerkit:

If you will not be an active member of a club i.e shooting at least once a year, you may be asked to dospose of your handgun.
I would suggest to transfer it to a trusted friend who will care for it, and take you out as a "guest" from time to time.

The Quebec government cannot compel people to surrender firearms for not using them.

The Firearms Act states that if you have a restricted firearms license, you are allowed to possess restricted firearms. The provincial government CANNOT trump that act.

You do not have to dipose of your firearms unless you are possessing them contrary to the Firearms Act.

The provincial government has no authority to order people to surrender legally possessed firearms. The only power they have is the power the Firearms Act gives them, which gives the CFO powers to place conditions on transport and carry of restricted firearms.

It would also be in violation of the Quebec Charter, which recognizes the right to possess property as allowed by law.

It's taking so long for my new lic. to come that I had to sign my guns over to my wife. This includes a prohibited so now I will probably lose my grandfather rights. I thought Harper was going to do better than this. I have no record of any kind and no complaints. I am sort of disapointed.

My brother who has had a little star model F pistol n 22LR since the early 1970's received a letter from the SQ giving him 30 days to dispose of the pistol or join a club and be an active member. Since the cost of joining a club was a few hundred dollars and he had this gun only as an acquisition he had made as a young man, he decided to transfer it to me so that I could sell it for him at a decent price and not in a rushed quick sale. He got a fair price for it ( purchased for 45$ new and sold for 250$ used) but he still does not believe that the public will be safer because he does not own it anymore.
