My first custom bolt gun build!

Last week I opened up a package and found inside the Remington 700 SA barrelled action in 6.5CM that I ordered when it went on sale and with that arrival it’s time to put the ball in motion to build my new PRS rifle. Here are the specs as to what I am planning to build;

-R700SA stock action
-IBI 26” shouldered barrel in 6mmBR (I wanted a 28” barrel but the fine folks at IBI said to go 26” to avoid any flex issues with the stock action)
-MDT ACC chassis in FDE with the internal weight kit
-MDT muzzle brake
-MDT 6BR 12 round metal magazines x2
-stock Remington X-mark trigger (just for the break in while I research and allocate funds for a better trigger)

I know that the big glaring elephant in the room is using a stock action instead of a custom one and here is my thought process on that. I am working within a defined budget after selling my current production rifle plus some saved cash so because of that I had to make some choices either go custom action right now and then go with a cheap chassis/wait and save for months and have no rifle to shoot or go with a stock action and buy the chassis system I plan to use for the foreseeable future and I chose the latter. I am not at a point in my skill level yet where I will see a huge improvement going from a stock to a custom action so this way I can have a rifle to shoot and practice with this year and gain some much needed skills and experience and then next year upgrade to whichever action I choose (I am thinking the KS Arms Wolverine or a PGW). My end goal is to have this rifle be 100% Canadian made using Canadian parts by the time it is 100% complete and I am very much looking forward to the build!

What would everyone’s choice of trigger be? I know the trigger tech diamond is a great option used by many. Any other thoughts on the build? I will update with pictures as things come together

Cheers all, and happy shooting!

My favourite trigger these days is the TriggerTech 2-stage Special. I have a 2-stage Diamond as well but don't run my triggers low enough to require the super low end on the Diamond so the Special fits the bill. All my Specials feel identical to my Diamond.

I wouldn't sweat having a R700 action instead of a custom action. I have a couple R700s as well as a few customs (Defiance Elite, ARC Nucleus, Stiller Tac338) and sure, the customs are "nicer" and built to tighter tolerances but it's not something you really notice when running a bolt under time. One of my R700s has over 10k rounds on it since it was cerakoted and it's as smooth as butter...

I will have to check out the trigger tech special. I am excited to see how the R700 action runs and holds up. I have never actually owned a Remington rifle so I am hoping with some break in it runs well. Where did you get your cerakote done?

I had both my R700s cerakoted by Insite Arms when they did the barrel work for them.

Trigger tech special is what I prefer in my rifles. Haven't tried the 2 stage but the singles have been very crisp and light enough for my uses.

What 700 are you building off? I noticed quite a difference in quality and feel between a 5r milspec model and an sps varmint. The stainless milspec was quite smooth and nice to operate.

I believe I am building off the mil spec action. Black oxide coated. I bought from sfrc and the description does not say exactly what model but it’s not the varmint or the stainless. Running the action as just the barreled action it seems to be smooth enough. Still has that new action stiffness but a few hundred cycles will break it in a bit I hope. I might get it coated like rugbydave did to help smooth it out if needed but going to try it stock first.
