so i know i want to get a AR15 with a 20" bbl but i dont know if i want it in .223 or 5.56 with or with out a scope what are the pros/cons of the options

The 5.56 chamber is a little looser than the civilian spec .223. Some believe this to be an issue when discussing accuracy. The real question is what is the intended purpose of the rifle. A strictly target rifle with the intended purpose of accurate and consistent groups would not benefit from iron sights unless you intend to master the irons for the sake of mastering irons. If distance shooting is your game than glass is a requirement. Whether or not you reload will play a factor in deciding what chamber spec you select. Determine what you want out of the rifle, then decide on what will aid in achieving that goal.

If target shooting is your game then as mentioned iron sights will be of little value. A .223 chamber will afford a better "fit" for civilian spec match grade ammo or reloads. A free float fore-end will provide consistent barrel harmonics while allowing the attachment of a bipod. A precision stock such as that offered by Magpul(the PRS) and a match trigger would both be of value. The sky is the limit when it comes to AR's of any sort.

well for the short time that i got to serve in the forces i did get to fire cuple rounds down a C7 and a C7A2 and i would like AR the feels very close to the same as those

If you want as close to a C7A1 as you can get buy a 20" flat top with a removable carry handle. Walter at Arms East has them for $1575 IIRC.

My advice is to skip the free float, match this match that upgrades and just shoot it. Then bring your iron sighted rifle down to Chilliwack for the end of May and shoot the BCRA Service Rifle championships, there you will be able to talk to people who shoot the rifles (and have shot them for decades) and look at the optics in use before buying a scope. Then when you can out shoot your rifle (prone, sitting, kneeling and standing) start upgrading towards space gun land.

Remember, this is just my opinion.

i like your idea gunnerlove however i dont think i will be able to go down in may are there any other events soon or later my may is booked solid

No realy point in a 5.56 chamber all the ammo I've seen in bulk is .223, plus finding the 5.56 barrel may not be easy.

Hi. for the past little while. i myself have been wanting to get an ar 15. i have been looking at DPMS panthers.. allthough im not too familiar with the ar 15 platform.. i myself prefer the ww2 era combat rifles. i read this forum dicussing the .223 and 5.56. ive also been wondering about what calibre to get it in, weather i should get it in a 7.62/.308, or the .223. my main qeustion is, where do i get my hands on an ar 15, and what companys can i get it from in canada. i havent really read into our restrictions and thought here would be the best place to ask. if somone who knows can help me out with this. that would be really great. help a newbie out . John
