Heres the result of my winter project.
It can be such a tough exercise shooting out far when you're alone....spotting hits ( and usually misses) so like many others, I tried to develop a long range solution.
Being a complete techno-idiot, I want to emphasize that all the credit for the component choices are due to a gentleman who I met on Sniperhide (I think) named John Tsokatos.....I can't thank him enough...

Anyway, finally got to test today, the whole system worked at 1 mile, my requirement was for 1.5 mile (where I hope to shoot at this summer) but crappy weather prevented me from moving out there today.....

This is all at my one mile target.....will post when I try it at 1.5.......

Nice setup, hope to have mine finished by this summer too.

Looks like you might need to build a hood around the monitor to cut down on the glare.

Are you set up to record too ?

I haven't set up to record, only monitor.
Kind of lost track, but I think I'm around $1000.00, including the material for the stands, monitor, and two power supplies.
I have a components list, anybody care to PM their e-mail address, I'll send it to ya.

Nicely done.

Are those antennas quite high off the ground or does the photo just make it look that way? Sine you must have line of sight from your firing point to the target in order to be able to shoot, I would have thought that you'd only need to have your antennas a few feet above ground level.

Is it top secret that you can't share the set-up with everyone on this post?

No, but its a pain in the ass for me to do all this linking and stuff....did it in one e-mail I can send to those who want it....

Also in there I quoted an illustration from John about the need and calculations for the antenna height, turns out I went to 15 feet for my intended capability of 1.5 miles. Depends a great deal on terrain as well.

Still unknown is the life on the power packs, the monitor end I can supply from inverter in my pickup if need be, but I'm hoping I can get several hours out of the existing power packs, may have to get more back-ups.

Thanks for the email, DMay (for some reason though the illustration didn't come through). The reason I asked about antenna height is that I have an electronic target system which uses a 5GHz wireless connection and at 900m (the farthest distance I've tried yet) I've had the antennas only about 3' above ground level and had way lots of margin (S/N of more than 30dB). So while I don't *know* that a lower antenna height would work for your 1.5 mile connection, it would seem like a big enough improvement in convenience to perhaps try some day.

Don't know why that illustration won't go with the e-mail, but its just a drawing of the two antennas and the vertical clearance between them.
I built the uprights on my stands in two pieces, for portability, and connected so I can use just one piece, approx 7 feet, if I can get away with it. As I play with it more, I'll see when the extra height is needed. I'm fortunate that, at my longest range, both ends are very high compared to the ground between, so may not actually need the full height.
One word of caution, should anybody order the same trans/reciever, on my txmitter, the leads are marked wrong, the video plug-in is actually marked as R audio.....just something to watch for and avoid the perplexing hour I spent wondering why things weren't working.

DMAY,
Regarding power for transmitter.Princess Auto had a sale on solar panels.
I've used a small one(foldable from CT) to keep the charge up on my CT portable 12v.Maybe an idea ??for those long sessions.
