When my stepdaughter was nine, I had no trouble at all introducing her to shooting with an old CZ618 air rifle. She's also enjoying a simple recurve bow and does quite well with my Henry lever 22. She's 11 now and will be 12 in a few months. I'm really proud of her!
My wife was a bit more challenging, but I got her hooked using air power. Once she realized how much fun plinking tin cans was with my HW30s, the push to rimfire was seemless. That was a year ago, and she's gotten pretty sharp with the lever gun too.
The hardest challenge was my oldest daughter. She was flinching with an air rifle, and was a bit turned off. I kept at it though and she has finally come around. The Henry won again and this time all it took was some CCI quiet and some spinners. She only wanted to stop after her arms were tired.
So now the simple little Henry lever has helped me convert five total friends and relatives, and I rarely go shooting alone anymore.
Now center fire!

Very cool! I plan on taking my kids out and they are eager to do so but they are still a little too young. My daughter is 8 and my son is 5, come to think of it my daughter is old enough to start but I think I'll wait one more year for my son. I was thinking I'd wait till next year and start with a bolt action .22 shooting cans. Then I was planning on moving them up to gophers. I'm not sure what age they will be ok with that. My son won't have a problem but my daughter is pretty sensitive so not sure she'll be into that but we'll see I guess. What are your thoughts on that?

I should add I bought a Ruger America rimfire and plan to get a Ruger American center fire eventually for them to graduate to as the action, safety, and trigger are identical making the transition easier (I hope) but one thing at a time. I don't own a center fire yet just .22's and a 12 gauge for hunting birds in the fall. Also my brother has offered to trade me his lever action 30-30 for one of my .22's. I love lever's and have always wanted one so that may become an option also.

Also I have always found air rifles, pellet guns and BB guns to be inaccurate and therefore lead to more frustration then anything and are just a waste of time and money. But maybe I'm wrong on that or a lot has changed? I don't really see the point in spending $$$ on one but obviously you did and it worked pretty well. Perhaps room for some discussion on that too?

Thanks for sharing, Mulby. I know you from CAF and how much you enjoy your air rifles, including your HW 100's. PB's are the next step for those you are mentoring.

BB guns are notoriously inaccurate and can be very frustrating, indeed. Air rifles that shoot pellets can be a very different story. If you haven't seen or used good quality air rifles, you are missing something. Many spring piston are quite powerful and very accurate, and PCP (pre-charged pneumatic) rifles can often be much more accurate than run-of-the-mill .22 rimfires.

Hi Saskatchestan. I recall being around 7 and my sister around 9, and going with my Dad to shoot the .22 for the first time. It was quite memorable. I shot first and nailed a gopher, my sister lost her poop in celebration. It's a fond memory I keep of my Dad, and it was the beginning of many boxes of ammo I'd spend my allowance on. As far as airguns go, it's really about what you get. HW, Walther, Air Arms etc, are some of the ones to get if you want something really accurate that wont disappoint. Not a cheap hobby.

Hi Grauhanen. I've not been around the CAF for a while. But yup I have a strong addiction to air power still. Over the last year I've gone head long into pb's again and have ended up with an H001, a Golden boy, a Big boy .357, and Beretta CX4. Just in the process of wearing in a CZ513 I found for a good deal. Having a place to enjoy air pb and archery again is heavenly.
