I haven't had a .22 in a while. It's been nagging at me but just hasn't been able to become a priority. I think today it just did.

My good friend is on holiday and lent me his K10/22T for the duration. I decided today was looking great to do a little shooting and took it to the range.
A few groups later I was starting to think about targets of opportunity.
There are a bunch of bring orange metal gongs out at the +200yd range and I just had to try for one.
I supposed I should mention that the rifle is scoped with the cheapest 3-9 scope that Tasco makes, I keep telling my buddy to spend on optics but I guess it's falling on deaf ears.
Perhaps 5 rounds and a lot of guessing for elevation later I heard the first *ting!* what felt like forever after I squeezed off the shot. After that it was just too easy. The gongs were about 8" wide by 18" tall.
I don't think I've ever been so satisfied as to just sit there shooting that gong.
I have to say it attracted quite a bit of attention from the other two people on the range as well. They were amazed at how consistantly it could hit the target at that range. There was absolutely no wind which is the only reason it was possible.

To sum up. I must find myself a decent rimfire. I don't know if it will be a bolt-gun or perhaps an autoloader (although I'm leaning there). All I know is I just had a heck of a good time for $10.

Cheers,
Grant

I had a 600 and I wouldn't choose to get another to be honest.
I am however looking very hard at a Mk2 FV or possibly a 597, very different guns but both excellent.

We measured the gongs today: 8x18"
I'm going to make-up some 3" and 4" spinning targets and try for them at 200 yards, that will definately be a challenge.
Cheers,
Grant

I shoot a cooey 60 with a 3x9x scope out to 200 yards . I hit a 12" x 12" gong at this distance. A cheap rifle, no modern gadgets to break down, doesn't need an after market trigger to help it shoot, and after about 60 years of shooting, it still goes bang each time. it takes its place next to my 151ms (1936) 152K (1937) Cooey 64s (1950s) and soon Marlin 81 ( 1936-39)...

One of my hobby horses is that every shooter needs a good .22 and should shoot it often. It is the best (and cheapest) way to both perfect and maintain your marksmanship skills.

If I find that I'm not shooting my centerfires as well as I can and should my response is to get out the .22, go back to basics and figure out what I'm doing wrong.

I routinely set up 1/2 and 1L water bottles at the 200 yard mark at the local range. It takes some time to figure out where to "lob" the .22 in, but hits are definately possible and are made surprisingly regularly. I shoot a cooey '60 and MKII FV. Mind you the '60 is open sighted, so it is really a hail mary type of shot, but the MKII can make hits out at 200 (with its 18x scope of course).

I couldn't agree more, the only way to get better is to shoot more. Unless you are born rich the price of rimfire ammo is a great reason in its self.

Today after work rather than face weekend traffic I went to the range before going home. I shot about 80 rounds of .204 Ruger but while waiting between 5 and 10 round groups for the barrel to cool I had my .22 there. I think that I shot about 400 rounds of .22 ammo (not sure as the bulk pack was not full).

While it is not identical, the need for consistent breathing, cheekweld, etc is all the same as with my varmint rifle.

For a semi-auto the Ruger 10/22 is hard to beat as its unlimited with options for customizing it.

For a bolt gun I think the CZ rifles are great value.

But by all means go with what fits you best.

I admit I've been on a real shotgun kick for the last year.
After getting rid of my 600 (if just didn't light my fire, can't really place why) I knew I'd need to get another, I just didn't have it this far up the priority list until now.
We'll just have to see how things fall-out after the Christmas bills come in. I'm getting deployed in Febuary so it may have to wait until I'm back home.

Cheers,
Grant
