Comes back to life. Well hopefully anyways.
A trip to my Mom's over Christmas had her give me two model 60 rifles, although both in fairly rough condition. After my dad passed away, she hauled these out to the shop where they sat wrapped in a pillowcase for the last 10 years. BC humidity took its toll, but some elbow grease, 3 in 1 oil, and 00 steel wool has them looking as good as they can. In reality I kind of like it; They have some patina like their new owner ha ha.
One is very rough but the better example has been interesting to do some research on. I had refinished the stock back when I was probably 12 and reading lots of Farley Mowat Books, and it still looks decent. It seems to be a fairly early example, stamped as a model 60, no scope holes. A couple screws including the action screw/jam nut aren't original, but I will replace them. It has what I guess must be an aftermarket Marble rear sight, with the rear adjusting step elevator. It is a small flat top with a two peep holes, one offset to the right of the bore and slightly lower? I can't seem to find one like it on the Web. The blade front sight is a little unique maybe too, where the entire vertical post is brass.
It's been fun doing some research and after 50 passes down the barrel to clean it, I look forward to getting it out and shooting it. This particular rifle has been in the family for 50 years, and I hope it's another 50 at least.
