Another Gun-Kote Question

I've never used it, but I'm now thinking of trying it on one of my shotguns. (it has a nasty scratch on the receiver after being dropped, and I can't get my touch-up to blend properly).

Looking for opinions from those who have used it; just how durable is Gun Kote? Does it resist scratching to the same degree as other finishes, (i.e. park, brown or blue?)
I understand it is baked-on, but can it go over any type of original finish?

Also, info for a supplier in SW Ontario where I can source it would be appreciated.

Thanks for any info!

I have used it on an alloy, semi-auto shotgun receiver. I blasted it first with aluminum oxide media - not glass beading. I found the durability of the finish to be mediocre, at best.

Results must be different if used on steel, judging by past posts on here.

you can go over park if it is clean.

recommend that you bead blast the existing finish. I recommend using the primer which promotes the gunkote to adhere in a very durable finish. you will need an airbrush and oven big enough to fit your gun into. if you follow the gunkot instructions i have never had a problem.

yes it may wear a bit on a 90 degree edge but i have never had a gun rust once gun kote was applied.

their aircure stuff, i am not so crazy about, but the bake on is the only way to go if you want my 2 cents.

I use lots of it. First I parkerize the steel, then apply and bake on the GunKote. It give a nice look and superior finish for protecting from the elements. Have a look at the Gallery section on my web site.

Nice work.....
My shotgun already has a passable park finish, so I was hoping to just spray & bake the receiver / barrel to give it a more uniform finish (and hide the ugly scratch).

Where can I get a can??

Who sells it in Canada. There is a place in Nova Scotia that sells it, but they want twice as much to ship it as the product costs.

A blasted finish, or parkerized finish is the best to apply it over. The "primer" is K-Phos, and is basically a cold parkerizing solution.

It's a flammable paint, so it is considered dangerous goods to ship. I think that has a lot to do with the shipping price.

+1. I've been using it for going on 3 years and love it. yes you can scratch it off if you hit the rifle against something hard enough but you would be hard pressed to find a finish that won't mark.
