I have a 2T series Inglis with two J1 mags and holster stamped 1944 and what I think is a C broad arrow .
Frame, slide and barrel serial number all match although it seems one digit has been re-stamped on each part.
My question is what is the significance of the "J1" mag as I often see it mentioned?
From a collectors point of view what would be an acceptable method to pin, or limit mag capacity to 10 rounds?
Finally is there a site or information anywhere that would help one grade his pistol by mentioning what is considered fair, good, very good etc… by mentioning how holster wear, slight pitting etc affects value?

Thanks
Allan

The marking on the mag is actually JI for John Inglis (John Inglis Company, Toronto). The significance is that mags marked with JI are original Canadian military mags and are original to the pistol. I have some mags that have been dimpled to limit capacity to ten, there's no rivets or pins, and the bases haven't need welded. IMO it's the cleanest way to limit them. I'll try and post pictures later.
I have a book on Inglis Hi-Powers at home, I'll take a look and see what else I can answer for you.

Probably better if the wood block is somehow secured in place.....Epoxy or silicone might be a good start depending on how permanent you want it.

I picked up a couple JI mags for mine a couple years ago. They came with replacement extended mag followers that limit the travel to 10 rounds. No external signs of modification except the followers are a black plastic instead of the original metal. The guy I got them from couldn't remember who made them. If anyone knows who used to make these, or source for them, I'd like to find a couple more.

I'm not 100% about the legality of wood blocks. A friend of mine who has been apprenticing as a gunsmith for a few years has told me that the alteration needs to be permanent, ie. rivets, welded pins, wood blocks WITH welded bases. Like I say, I'm not 100% sure but thats what I was told. Its a shame, because it would be nice to keep them looking totally original.

Here's a few pictures of how mine were limited. All that they did was dimple the sides, no holes, welds, or pins/rivets. They must have put something inside the mag body to keep it from deforming because they feed and function perfectly.
