Trying to sort a few things out, question:

When selecting a handguard and barrel are both components measured from the same location on receiver? I can check this on my own but I'm not home for 2 weeks

To clarify, if I buy a 12 inch handguard and a 12.5 inch barrel will there be half inch protruding? Or same handguard with 10.5 will I be 1.5 inch recessed with a kx5 screwed on at 2.5 inches protruding one inch?

Upper is aero m4e1. There are some specifics here but they are not so important just looking for landmarks on the rifle so I can make proper measurement. I know barrel length is sometimes done from bolt face but not sure if this applies here

Yes in the case of the math that makes sense but is the 12 inch rail measured from exactly the same spot as the 10.5 inch barrel back at the receiver end?

Yes a 10.5 inch barrel + 2.5 inch flash hider will protrude 1 inch from a 12 inch rail.

In the case of math AND in the case of AR15's.

To answer your question properly, the barrel is mesured from crown to bolt face with a dowel. Not from a specific spot on the receiver. The handguard however is simply mesured from one end to the other, regardless of where on the barrel it starts or ends.

However in my experience, a 12.5 inch barrel will mesure 12.5 inch from the receiver to the start of the threaded end.
