Another new Mosin owner and an ammo question.

I have just started to load for my mosins. I have only loaded 180 grain sierra pro hunters so far with mixed results. I have some hornady bullets I will try they are 174gr FMJBT and some 123gr as well. I bought sand bags yesterday to make the shooting more load test than shooter test.

I always slug the bore and get a good measurement of whats left. A dark or warn bore can still shoot very well by going to a .312 or .313 bullet.

I keep my loads to 150gr to keep the rifles sighted the same for surplus ammo. Although 180s shoot well in any Mosin.

What did your bores slug out to. I'm just starting to reload 7.62 x 54 and am in the data collecting stage.

10-04 on reloading. I have my groups much better with my own loads compared to commercial or surplus. Still experimenting though.

As for the sight not going low enough, use a piece of heat shrink over the front sight and clip it about one millimeter higher than the existing front post. This will correct for shooting without the bayonet and will not molest your rifle in any way.

I'd have to find some Boxer primered cases before I can get into reloading at all. I'll be keeping my eyes open for some but in the meantime I'm going to buy an 880 rnd case of brass cased surplus from Westrifle to tide me over. And since this is a "plinker" for me I may never bother with reloading if I can buy surplus at just over $300 a case.

Good idea on the use of some heatshrink for the front sight. I still want to take this loose chamber gun back and see if I can get an exchange for one that is actually in spec. I'm hoping the sights will be better as a side bonus. I'm a bit worried that two guys with some reasonably extensive rifle experience were worried from a safety perspective that the cases were bulging and splitting at the shoulder on my rifle.

For some its about plinking, for others its about being as accurate as possible even if reloading is the answer.

The sights will shoot high on any Mosin with the bayonet off. Different rifle will have a similar problem.

I really don't have a comment for the case ruptures. I haven't seen them or the rifle itself. Best to error on the side of caution. Have a qualified gunsmith look at it. Sounds like a head space issue to me, but again, I haven't looked at it.

Mosin 91/30 with dark bore slugged at .315

M44 East German slugged at .3135

and Svt40 slugged at .313

The Groove diameter for these rifles is .311 Anything over .313 I'll increase the bullet diameter by at least 1/1000
