I know I know... newbie...

So... I noticed this hole on my stock...

m14.jpg

I can see the gas piston through the hole, but I'm wondering what purpose this hole serves? I doubt gas would eject through it, since it's just plastic, and I know the gas vents through the hole in the bottom of the gas block (also pictured here)...

But I was wondering why that hole is there? I want to rip off the standard sling swivel and add a QD so I can get a bipod on there, but I dunno if I can cover that hole.

Cheers.

Would poking a QD stud through there be the end of the world?
What if I drilled out another one further back?

Thanks for the answer.

best to follow the stickies and drill out one of the rivets on the forward sling swivel- why people DON'T BOTHER TO READ them is beyond me- most every question and a lot more knowledge is contained therein
and use a t-nut on the opposite side - the thread is 8-32

I think it's CAA that makes a small rail that has two screw holes and a steel back plate that fits in the sling mount holes. I mounted one on my m14 and had to drill outthe holes about 1mm larger and put a bipod and pic rail sling adaptor on mine.

To be fair, many are dozens of pages long. I did look for a search option before asking but couldn't find one. That might be me being dumb though...

;)

So from what I gather, it's best to drill out the rivets holding the sling on and replace with a short rail...

Cool.

putting on a rail also mandates that you have to get a bipod or adaptor that uses a rail( duh) before the cheeze grater era( where there's rails mounted all over the forend) we just drilled out the front rivet, ( go from the inside out,as the rivet is domed and your bit will wander , scratching your stock- at least my usgis are) cut the wings off the t-nut, and screwed the sling swivel stud in place- then put the action back into the stock to see how much excess there was( there's ALWAYS excess) and dremeled that off- then you put jb weld or some other epoxy to hold it in place and let it sit for 24-48 hours
now you have a sling swivel stud that will take almost any bipod- esp harris
harris also makes and adaptor which you can use in place of the t-nut, but the t-nut was like about 2c whereas the harris adaptor was like 14 bucks

The hole is there for two reasons, water drainage while humpin the swamps and patties of vietnam AND it's main purpose, to allow the gass expelled from the gas cylinder to vent down so they do not rise and escape around the handguard.
It's not there to be plugged with a bipod stud but some have used it for that purpose..

I always left that 'weep' hole for said purpose. In the past when I wanted to install a bipod QD stud, I just drilled out the rivets and then retired that sling swivel plate.

I used some fiberglass and resin to fill the 2 holes and then redrilled and installed a drilled and tapped washer (smaller size diameter of course) with a # 10 x 24 or # 10 x 32 tap depending upon the tpi (thread pitch) of your QD stud. Needless to say, some are 32 tpi and some are 24 tpi depending upon who machined your QD stud. Uncle Mike's comes to my mind.

Have fun with the project!

Cheers,
Barney
