LOL, I ask too many questions...

I got looking at how much more the sabot slugs cost than the rifled slugs, and are starting to debate whether I want to have a rifled barrel (870 combo), or stick with only the smoothbore barrel 870 and just shoot rifled slugs.

For my purposes a slug gun is going to be used inside of 50 yards, so the extended range I would get with the rifled barrel is a non issue. I think for someone who hunts deer in a slug only hunting area, the rifled tube is a worthwhile consideration, especially if he anticipates shots which approach or exceed 100 yards.

That's a pretty good excuse to start casting and reloading your own slugs... This way it will cost you less to shoot slugs then to buy birdshoots :evil:

Lee mold too

I cast my own slugs using the Lee Drive Key slug mold. producing 1oz slugs travelling at 1430fps with 35grs Herco pwdr. In conjunction to the homemade slugs I also picked up a Carlson rifled choke tube. The combination of slug choke a Win.1200 shotgun produce 3" groups at 50yds and double at 100 as long as I do my part. It sure cuts the cost of factory sabots/rifled slugs and recoil can be managed.
 
Well, I think I'm going to get an 870 COMBO, that way I will have both options anyways.

At my camp up north it's thick country, so I may just use smooth bore barrel, plus then I can pop in a shot shell to pick off the odd partridge for lunch. :)

Then if I hunt down home here, I have the rifled barrel for hunting the fields.
