What do you guys think i should do? here is the deal, I have a norinco SKS, ati stock and a NC Star gas tube mount. I know the first thing you'll say is get a side mount. But i won't, i want to work with the gas tube first.

NOW, the gas tube is very tight, it took alot to get on there, it seems to hold a zero pretty good. So far trying to sight in at 50 yards, groups about 1-2" over 60-70 rounds but it's about 18" low with the red dot on it's lowest setting.

Should i just shim up the back of the red dot where it mounts to the rail? or will that even work? I would like to have the adjustment in the middle so i can go either way ya know...

Hope that makes sense to you guys.
Thanks for your help.

My next sks gets a side mount!

One that I would recommend for the SKS that I am going to take some flak over is this;
Leupold Prismatic Scope

Features:
The removable Illumination Module screws into the Leuopld® Prismatic™ 1x14mm Tactical to illuminate the reticle in red.
Remove the Illumination Module, and the etched glass reticle is still visible, so youre never battery dependent.
Nine brightness settings for changing light conditions, with an automated low-battery indicator.
The Leupold Circle Plex™ reticle is etched glass, making it visible at all times even without batteries unlike conventiontional red dot sights. Its also extremely sharp and clear, unlike the fuzzy dot of red dot sights.
With a more generous field of view than competitive red dot sights, youre on target faster.
The true 1x optical system allows you to shoot with both eyes open for the superior depth perception and wide field of view thats crucial for fast target acquisition and reactive shooting.
Slotted, ½-MOA click windage and elevation adjustments are easy to change with the edge of the adjustment cover.
The integrated base system includes different height mounting spacers to work on any type of firearms platform.
The Prismatic is also compatible with the A.R.M.S. #22-34mm Throw Lever Rings Base and Spacer System, and conventional 30mm rings.
Can be mounted using a ratchet over the outside or inside the mounting screws handle.
This system decenters the objective lens, rather than tilting the erector system, so its more repeatable and more durable.
Exterior lens surfaces are treated with DiamondCoat 2™ for increased light transmission and abrasion resistance.
The true focusing eyepiece means the Prismatic can be adjusted and used by anyone.
The illuminated Circle Plex reticle provides a bold aiming point, and can be used to estimate range.
With the thickest maintube of any Leupold ever built, its our most rugged scope ever…its practically indestructible.
Absolute waterproof integrity.

As for a mount get an NcStar weaver rail like this to correct your problem;

okay, i must have messed that up trying to say it... I have a mount "NCStar Gastube", I have a red dot it's a Aimpoint clone of some kind. My problem is that when i have it at the "highest setting" I put the dot on target and it shoots about 18-24" low at 50 yards. Holds a zero so far and shoots pretty good just waaaayyyyy to low.

Thinking on shimming the back of the peice that attaches to the rail, but not sure if that will correct it.

Thanks.

but it's about 18" low with the red dot on it's lowest setting.

lowest setting as in you've turned it in the "up" direction and there is no more adjustment?

Or lowest setting as in you've turned it "down" and there is no more adjustment?

Does it shift POI when changing from red to green? If so then it won't last much longer. If it changes POI depending on illumination level then again thia red dot won't last to much longer.
Now if it's the same all around then you need the riser to elevate the POI as it is to low. Only do this if you ran out of elevation correction on your fakepoint.
As for your fakepoint lasting it will not work as long as it would on a 22 LR do to the design of the sks. When you gas pistion meats the op-rod the vibrations will after a while viberate the conection's loose. Please note the middle of the page pictures;

i had that same thought about the leupold sight, but the cost i last saw at some optics site is going for about $400usd.
this would be nice but the price is little steep to say the least.
