HK's answer to the Minimi. This one has a 13.5" fluted barrel. Its ejection port opens downwards instead of to the right. Because of the ejection port position, the ammo box is hooked on the left side of the gun. This thing actually weights a bit more than the FN. It does "feel and look" more solid than the FN. The barrel trunnion appears to be a block of steel wielded to the stamped receiver.
Another feature is that the barrel of the MG4 can be changed without retracting the bolt to the rear because the bolt does not lock up to the barrel. (and probably the reason the trunnion is a steel block) So that will save half a step in the barrel changing drill.
The bipod of the MG4 can also be pulled backwards and pushed up to dig in. That is a feature requested by the Germany military.
