only shot out to 100 meters today.. but it was alot of fun.

Went to sight in the Savage Axis in winter camo i purchased from Cabelas, and I am super impressed.

First off.. the Bushnell scope that comes with it, is garbage, so are the rings. The bases are livable.

Another thing, is the rumors about the trigger being heavy .. is true. But mine on the trigger scale is about 4.5 pounds.. and it breaks clean..suprisingly. The Bolt functions smooth and very enjoyable to cycle. It ejects empty cases awesome.

This firearm is balanced nice.. and will make a great carry coyote gun. I wont lie....I am considering another...but the scope and rings they come with will need to be replaced.

I was using el cheapo Winchester whitebox 45 gr .223 ammo.... and managed to shoot 5.....3 shot groups that were tight enough to be touching on 4 of the groups.....the last one was about 3/4 inches, ... and it was pretty breezy out there today. Super impressed. Luck? i dont think so.

I know alot of people dont like an ugly rifle.. but I sure enjoy owning Savage rifles. My Model 14 American is by far a favorite

The barrel and receiver are obviously stainless. What is the bolt handle made out of? It is just painted?

And what range is that near Edmonton? I know it's not Genesee...

How much did that gun cost you?

It's the Cabelas exclusive, right?

Edit: just looked it up. $490?!?! For that you could get a vanguard and have $50 left over for signature zee rings. Since you're going to get a new scope anyway, the vanguard is cheaper since for the same price you can afford better rings.

Hell, for less money you can buy a savage 111 package with the same rings and scope. The difference is the 111 has a nicely adjustable trigger I can get down to 2-3lbs wih one screw turn, has metal magazine retainer, trigger guard etc.

In terms of value, this rifle is actually very poor value. The scope and stainless is so damn shiny I don see what the camo could possibly do for you.

With those other options available, I'm not sure why anyone would prefer this one unless 'most hideous gun in the world' is the main criterion.

Most hideous gun in the world would be the REM 710.

Good points.. But still... This gun was bought for a "throw behind the seat, lend to a friend, drop on the ground, get scratched and beat up POS rifle.".

Well aware of what else could have been purchased.

Thats exactly why I want a couple of them. I realized a few years ago that I have dozens of rifles, but they are all either supernice, or supernice and expensive. I also have friends that think I'm some kind of friggin gun guru and like to borrow my guns. Since I owe them many favors, I just can't seem to say no. This will solve the problem for me. A gun thats accurate, yet cheap, and one I don't have to worry about coming back all scratched up.

For a Savage it actually kinda looks nice (when I put my fingers over the hideous scope) :) it is obviously a shooter, and that ammo kills coyotes just like more expensive ammo. I remember Lane Simpson running a pile of different factory offerings through his rail gun in .223 and the white box Winchester came in as the most accurate followed by black hills and federal match.
Savage is as Savage does, and we can't knock you cause you are getting out and enjoying them. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.....but it won't stop a little ford/chevy/dodge style ribbing!
Great post! (ps where is that range?)
