another sks question

You an only use AK mags in the SKS D model.

The D is out of production right now, but they do come up for sale ( At crazy prices for an SKS) in the E+E forums every now and again.

what would be a decent price for a sks? I don't want a POS, should i stay away from norinco... what should i be looking for when buying a used sks? overall condition? color of stock? can someone give me the order of preference when it come to model, russian, norinco, chinese, yugo...ect?

Well the norinco's aren't too bad. They retail new for anywhere between $125.00 and $200.00. Some have had issues but I had one that went bang every time but it wasn't very accurate. from surplusrifle.com They seem to like the yugo as it is build much stronger than the others. The downside is that it has no chromelined bore so you want to inspect a used one well for rust. As well you want to keep it very clean after each use. They usually fetch between $300.00 and $450.00. The other eastern bloc rifles (Russian, Hungarian, Albanian) are fairly rare and will go for much higher than that.
My advise if you just want to shoot. Buy the Norc, but buy it from a local store so you can physically inspect it and get a look at the quality. Keep in mind they go for about the same used so if you do not like it you can always sell it. There is always someone looking to buy.

you can get 30rnd mags for an internal mag SKS too. I havent got a link, but they are around. they swing out just like the stock ones. personally, I think it's alittle silly seeing how you can only have five rnds, but hey, each to their own right!

I read sksboards and since it's in the U.S. where they can't legally have sks-d's people who want a detachable mag have to go with the duckbill mags. It sounds like they have a LOT of problems with them not feeding properly etc.. People have commented a lot about that.
Do you have any problems with your duckbill mags Holmes? (Or anyone else with these?) Very nice pics by the way Holmes! *drool*

A lot of people there also say that if you are practiced at using stripper clips you can reload the internal mag as fast as someone can change their detachable mags. I have no idea (and no experience, ha!) that's just what I've read. Personally when I get my non-d sks someday (damn addictive things, it is said you cannot stop at just one ha ha!) I am going to practice with stripper clips and keep the attached mag (but would swap it for a larger capacity one if the laws change in our favour! )...Personally I think attached and detachable both have their advantages, so I want both, hence the need for at least one...more....sks...just one, er maybe two, or umm a few. Yah.

the duckbills are unreliable-period.i have never used stripper clips with mine so i can't say but i can change an ak47 mag pretty fast,i would assume americans don't have an abundance of sks-d's due to no importation of chinese firearms.there used to be american made sks's called "cowboy companion" made by navy arms but had a 10 round fixed mag

All of the reviews that I have read about duckbills consistantly say they are unreliable. Also China is the only manufacturer of the SKS "D" and there is no importation of them in to the US. Even if there was why would you buy one when you could get a real AK/RPK from your choice of manufacturer?
