Another sks what i got thread

Some 56's did come with a laminate stock and the 55/56's had no markings on the receiver cover. The gas block, however, does look like an earlier variation. You can find more info on this site for reference...

Live with it for a bit and do some more research before modifying it. The "Supergrade" description is just a marketing ploy.

Great looking SKS! I don't see any reason to sand it down, it does have some cartouche stampings unlike all my refurbs that have nothing but ###'s.
Love that black bayonet!

Refurb. Relatively early rifle. Cover is late replacement from letter series '56-58 or from spare parts (note different font on cover). Stock replaced with new too.

Looked at this page theres nothing really that tells me much about this rifle other than its maybe or maybe not a refurb.

As Horilka has shared above, it would appear as a refurb with parts from various years. The Yooper John page will show how the parts differ from year to year such as the gasblock. That being said, your SKS looks really good.

Yeah its very nice some of the clear coatcor whatever You wanna call it is chipping off so i was thinking sanding it all down and the staining and tru oiling it i mean this may sound like murder but that why im askin value cause if its a collector or historic piece i probably woukd leave it but it seems that not the case

If you are going to remove the finish I'd suggest using a chemical stripper and 0000 steel wool in order to retain the serial number and any cartouches. Lots of explainations on the various milsurp forums on "preservation" techniques rather than "restoration" techniques. Laminates do look very nice with the appropriate finish. Just be careful not to do anything irreversible.

I heard using a solvent on laminate will cause the layers to swell

You may be correct on that. I recall reading something a while back that referred to laminates. There should be a few first hand accounts in the forums but I can't remember which forum I had seen that particular article.

Thats why i was gonna sand it down i have been doing research into refinishing I think ive narrowed it down how to do it just dont know where to find tru oil

Just remembered site where I got all info about SKS and how to tell if it refurbished or not:
