Ok I am in the market for a 18.5" barrel shotgun for bear defence. Now I plan on shooting rifled/non rifled slugs through it. So I did a search on this forum and it appears that you can use any choke with either slug ( correct ??) My question is how are these slug made ?? Are they small enough that they will go through any choke and if so does the rifling even matter ??? If a guy uses a Mossberg type (persuader or Mavrick type) gun I believe they come with a fixed Imp Cyl choke, so is the slug small enough that the rifling makes a difference in accuracy ??? Really I want to know how this whole thing works. Thanks

jacky, I think you want to stick with cylinder, IC, or modified at the tightest for shooting slugs...that is what a lot of people recommended to me. Most of the 18.5" barrels are now IC, I have seen great accuracy out of cylinder and IC to 100m using 'regular rifled' slugs.

Rifled slugs are meant for rifled barrels and oster style are meant for smooth bore barrels, you will get a little benifit shooting sabots from a rifled choke in a smooth bore but likely nothing magical....I have found the new sabots etc seem to be accurate enought to 15m IN SMOOTH BORE BARRELS (added for clarity) although I have only fired a handful.
The Foster type slugs are hollow base and the base expands to fit/seal the bore when it is fired.
Cheers

I wouldn't want to put them through a turkey choke. From what I understand a full choke is fine for rifled slugs.

rifled slugs are meant for smooth bore barrels. sabot style slugs are meant for rifled slug barrels. you can shoot rifled slugs through any choke but in most cases the best accuray come from the more open chokes such as IC.

Thanks for clearing that up 12mag, you beat me to it.

I shoot a stubby barrel for deer hunting with an IC fixed choke with rifled slugs and no issue dropping them at 50 yards. I'm sure the 18.5" with an IC and rifled slugs would do just fine on bear if the need arises. Also plugging rounds of buckshot in the dirt infont of him would work well for scaring him off as opposed to killing the bear.
