So bought one of the Stevens last fall and never really played with it since till now. Tried it in the spring and was having grief with it so swapped out scopes and got it some what shooting. That was using ammo loaded up for a different .223...so finally I got some loads done up for it yesterday and took it out. I was happy with the just slightly less then 3/4 inch groups I got out of it with Hornady 55 gr. SPSX'S This was after the work I put into it with the bar in the forend all bedded in and how I bedded the action which is in another thread in here some where...but any ways....TODAY...

Got up this morning and dug up some 50 gr. SPSX's and thought , meh why not. So loaded them up with the same powder and charge weight and even the same oal length...What did I have to loose me thought...Nuthin...dang it shot them even better...I have no idea what the rate of twist is in these newer ones or what bullet weight they would be best with ( if someone wants to chime in on this feel free)...but it liked it..

.492 for 3 shots out of a cold barrel off the bench...Gotta love it for a $350.00ish rifle..

Icehunter, what was the load you settled. Mt stevens shot 28.1 grains of BLC2 with the 55 grain Nosler BTs. Thats a smidgeon over max load.

22.0 grains of IMR 4198...by my one hornady book that should be just about max...didnt chrony it though. It was just a piss around waste time load...:D

I think I shot 2 boxes of white box with mine when I first got it. Groups were around an 1 1/4 inch for 5 shots @ 100.
One day I picked up a few of the live 223 ammo the police had had left behind on the range. Not sure what grain they were but they were remington. I put 4 into a group of 1 1/2 inch at 200 yards.

EDIT: the barrels are very light, great for what you want but they tend to walk when shooting long strings.

At one time I had four rifles in .223 - 1 remington - 1 cz - and 2 stevens - now just have two stevens . Both work great with 60 grain soft points and varget .

They have a 1:9 factory twist, and will stabilize the 75 gr Hornady A-Max.

Ted

So maybe trying something like a 60 grain slug is what you are saying?? Or is it just luck that I was able to stabilize the 50 grain slug to get it to shoot like that?? This thing is getting to be real fun to play with now and any reason to shoot it more works for meeeeeeee....:D

Buddy of mine got the 22-250.....3/4 MOA with Winchester White 40 rd Bonus Box ammo, EVEN BETTER with handloads now!...My stevens 243 loves the Winchester Super X best for factory ammo...100 grainers..cloverleafs @ 100 yds. My handloaded rounds use the same powder weight exactly for my 95 grainer B/Tips!! It gives me..1/2 inch groups @ 100...1" groups @ 200 yds !! For cheap guns...these'll shoot like a dream.

Mine shoots the Rem (UMC) el-cheapo 55 grains extremely well...not sure I'll bother to play with handloads. Biggest change in accuracy for me was swapping out the trigger group for Savage parts. Measures a little over 2.25 lbs now, smooth, no creep. Factory tube on these seems to be of pretty decent quality.

I tend to get better results with IMR 4320 when loading for .223 and 22-250 over varget...not too sure why this is...but it is the norm for me with a few different guns. It may or may not help you with your groups.
