According to his friend who witness the whole thing, the rifle blew up after only ten rounds through the barrel. He is a Navy Seal and knows exactly what he was doing. His friend also said that he specified how deep the flutes gonna be, when he ordered the barrel from Matchgrade Machining. The deeper flutes was the cause of barrel failure, according to them. I doubt it. As you can see the barrel peeled from the chamber towards the muzzle. Sounds like they're looking for scapegoat.

Therre have been some big issuses in the past with rebarrels and rechambers to 300WSM with these actions, I don't know why anyone would go for even more horsepower than that and put one in 3338RUM??!!:slap:

Thompson Center does not chamber Encore barrels in .338RUM...
The title of this post is inacurrate and gives the impression that Thompson Center has a problem with their barrels.
That is not the case, that barrel was not a T/C barrel!
The chambers are part of the barrel on these rifles and that rifle clearly failed in the after market barrel/chamber.
Actually it looks like the T/C portion of that rifle actually held together quite well, possibly saving the shooter from more serious injury.
I think this post should have been titled Matchgrade Machining barrel goes KaBoom!;)

What does an aftermarket barrel failure have to do with the Encore? The chambers are part of the barrel, which is aftermarket. Now, if its factory barrel failures, thats interesting news worth reading....

Hopefully he was wearing that watch facing inwards....or else it looks like there wouldnt be much of his wrist left:eek:

Looking closely, it appears that the barrel may have started to come apart just ahead of the chamber, right where the fluting seems to start, and peeled back and forward. I guess sparky the navy seal should have put a little more thought into his fluting depth request.

WTF does being a SEAL have anything to do with metalurgy:rolleyes:
as it has been stated the thread title is way off base. seesh that is one nasty looking kaboom though
