Hey Gang,

I have done a search with no luck...

So, relunctantly, I am looking at diving into the world of ARs. I have done some looking around, have read a bunch of opposing view points on the same firearm, and my mind is as clear as a muddied lake. I am looking for short barrel, .223, ideally fixed sights, and I do NOT want picatinny rails stuck (any)everywhere, full, out of the box ready to go as I don't want to piece together a Franken AR...

ie: http://www.armseast.com/store/right_hand_rifles/1r_carbine_with_detachable_carry_handle/

or: http://www.smith-wesson.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product4_750001_750051_786006_-1_757785_757784_757784_ProductDisplayErrorView_Y

I have narrowed it down to a Stag AR, or and Smith and Wesson M&P AR..and is the M&P evena available in Canada?

So..do you get what you pay for? Does anyone have any first hand experience with either of these two?

Any ideas and/or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Get a Norinco, and replace the furniture...that's what I did and pretty happy!

With handguns I care a lot about finish but with something like AR I just want it to function and feel right.

I don't have that particular model Stag, I have the 20" model 4.

What I can tell you is that Arms East is a top notch dealer and they will take good care of you. If you can afford a High-Mid tier AR then don't settle for a Norc, go with your gut.

I would tend to agree with this. I don't think most users would notice a significant difference between the two manufacturers you mention, but I will say that there are not many people I would prefer to buy from than Arms East.

I bought the 2R just before xmas. Couldn't be happier with the service or quaility of the rifle. I do have to double up on the ear protection with the muzzle break though. 1 guy even came over from the long distance range to see what I was shooting it was so loud. Also note that the 5 round mag is a Stag labelled LAR 10 rounder limited to 5.

 why would Stag label their mag as a Rock River Arms mag? please post a photo if you can.

as to the original post, there are no noticeable difference between the two, except the Stag comes with a muzzle device while the M&P barrel is not threaded at all.

Arms East more than like will have the Stage you are looking for in stock and ready to go, while the M&P you will have to dig around for one.

S&W has been sold up here, not sure who has them now. The stag is a better gun though - no question.

Is STAG still building S&W's AR's? They had in the past - not sure about the present. If they still are, would they not be of similar quality? Kind of like your Aero Precision/Armalite comparisson?

How about this LMT? In your price range and a great rifle on its own...

The price is right, but when I contacted Questar a couple of months ago re: coming up to have a hands on look at their FNP, they said "No". I will not buy any firearm that I cannot handle and hold prior to plunking down a wad of hard earned cash. So I guess Spike's Spider is out.

I called Lanz, and although he could get one (or maybe he had one...can't remember) he suggested a Norinco, which have not been ruled out. He stated the M&Ps only come in 16" (or was it 17?) barrel, and I want a shorter barrel version.

I contacted NEA this am to ask them what they have etc...no word back yet. Now to surf Stag's site...again.

I have had no experience with the S&W but will say I am more than happy with my mod 2T Stag and the customer service at Arms East. I had a small mag issue in the begining but the guys at Arms East sorted it out with out hesitation or delay from accross the country! I now have over 200 rounds through it with no FTF's or FTE's and my only real concern is getting more ammo!
It is 16' bbl but is chambered in .223 wylde for what it's worth.

Have fun shoping!

Edit: should have read my post before submiting bumped the "1" on my round count :) I wish I could shoot 1200 rounds in a month lol.

No idea, but I do know that S&W's that I've seen in Canada had A2 butts and non-threaded muzzles. Plus they are not backed by the lifetime Stag warranty through Armseast.

I remember when Armseast came on scene a number of years ago, Walter was making the claim that STAG was manufacturering AR's on S&W's behalf. That's why I ask. I don't think there shold be much in the way of quality differences between them. Specifications, I understand why both companies would want differentiating product lines. Overall quality - not so much.

A customer would take their warranty issues back to the dealer who represents the brand they purchased it from. If Armseast isn't a distributor or authorized dealer for S&W products, they simply wouldn't be involved with it.

Honestly, I am not sure if the lifetime warranty is a Stag warranty in Canada, or if it is ArmsEast warrantying them. In eithe case, S&W has been imported sporradically by a couple vendors and I have no idea who would do the warranty on them nor how good or long said warranty would be.
