I know there's been many of these thread already about people looking for recommendations for such and such. I've searched around and would like to know your guys opinions...

My buddy is looking for a 20 ga slug gun for next year's deer season, must be a pump or semi with wood furniture. The most inexpensive way to go seems to be an 870 express 20 ga combo. (or a 20 ga wingmaster for that matter) I did not / could not find a suitible semi-auto factory configured for slugs.(I'm I missing something?) He might go with the 870 just because of the attractive price point but I would think there has gotta be some other fine guns in this price range that meet his requirements.

What else is there?
price range is < $1300

You may wish to check out the Benelli M2 12ga or if you can find one (maybe Wholesale Sports in Calgary) then the M1 20ga......both not too far from the price range indicated.......I've been thinking of getting the 12ga myself.

Well, if you are willing to overlook the wood factor :)

Good question about 20 vs 12.... why wouldn't he want a 12 for deer hunting?

Weight? Recoil? Size of deer? Are these the concerns? Personally, If I was going to get the 870 express combo, I'd go 12 for the versatility. Unless he already has a 12... and in that case, just buy a rifled barrel for that one!

The fellow already has a 12 ga wingmaster with a separate slug barrel, The 20 ga is just something he wanted. I knew several people would pop up and ask why a 20 ga. I'd like to know why not? A 20 ga should be more than adequate for taking deer in southern Ontario. While personally I like my 12 ga Ithaca I do not see any reason why a 20 ga would not do the job.

I would like to here opinions on this though I'm sure the bulk of people out there use a 12g, I'd like to hear from those who use a 20 ga as well.

I think most of the semi's can shoot foster style slugs through chokes just not sabots.
Ben

Well, bbls with screw-in rifled chokes installed will accommodate sabots although not to the extent that a fully rifled bbl would perform. IMHO, the Benelli slug gun models (semi or pump) with rifled bbl is the better bargain depending on budget.

12ga Browning Gold Deerhunter.

It shoots Hornady 2 3/4 @ 2000FPS out of the muzzel and accurate.
Shoots consistant 2-3" groups at 100 yards. Now..! how will it do at
150-200 yards?
