Another What's It Worth? H&R Topper 158.

My Grandfather gave me this a few weeks ago and I took it out to the range today. Fun little gun!! I Googled the value of it and got quite the variation from as little as $100 to $400 depending on condition and barrels. It has no real sentimental value, my grandfather picked it up a few years ago and after realizing I'm turning into a gun nut he offered it up to me as he's downsizing his collection. I'd like to know it's value monetarily and historically to save me from wrecking a nice piece by doing what I'd want to do which is leave it in the trunk. I think it'd make a great bush/trunk/deer/grouse gun for when I'm at the in-laws. Can you guys offer up any input?

It's a Harrington & Richardson Topper 158 with 30-30 and 20 guage (modified) barrels. The serial has AL in it which I understand from some other forums indicates a 1973 manufacture date. It's in very good + shape, no rust, no pitting, the wood has some handling marks but nothing too serious. The pics didn't turn out as well as I'd hoped but they should help.

This is a tough one to appraise. Proper appraisal is done by examining what a similar article in similar condition, has sold for in the recent past, at an arms length sale.
Arms length sale means a sale where it has been well advertised on the market and examined by numerous potential buyers, with a negotiated sale resulting.
If anyone is aware of a sale of a gun like yours at such a sale, they could give you a good estimation of a selling price.
Otherwise, we'll just be pure guessing.

Looks too nice to let it bang around in the trunk.....

Maybe in a padded case it would be OK.....

I think that may just be the perfect trunk/behind the bench seat beater..... But that one looks too pretty!

I picked up a used one years ago for $100.What a tack driver!As a trainer for my son's stressing the importance of making the first shot count.Many deer and one moose later.....Harold
 
I saw a simlar set sell for $250 a while back, but that one was not as pretty as yours. I think you might get $300, maybe a bit more.
 
I have a set like yours with the 30-30 barrel and the 20 gauge barrel and paid $350 for the set.I added a scope and can hit the 200 yard gong with boring regularity.Easy take down and assembly and light weight to carry on a hike.
 
I think that since it was given to you by your grandfather you should take good care of it, use it and don't sell it. You can always buy a beater, but guns given to you by grandfathers are priceless. If you part with that or treat it poorly, you will likely regret it later when he is gone.

If you want a trunk gun get a new H&R with synthetic stock, they're only about $200. Twice that will get you a Stevens 200 you won't kick yourself about wrecking in 20 years.
