I bought an old Anschutz 64 single shot target rifle from a fellow CGNer. It says made in West Germany so it was made before the wall came down. It has sat for a long time unused and it is pretty gunky. I sure don't want to try taking the trigger or the micrometer sights apart so I was thinking about giving them a soak in naptha ? or Kroil ? or mineral spirits? What would you do?

Also the stock varnish is flaking off so I will be stripping that off. Any pointers regarding this would be greatly appreciated.

Does anyone have a manual they could scan to me?

It also came with a target sling that I have no idea how to adjust or use. Again any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Ken, didn't realize that you could read! How about one with pictures? Seriously, will give you call.

From your friend who actually finished ahead of you twice in Service Rifle out of many tries.

Although really gunsmithing:

Sorry Kevin - Ken Ferguson, LT. NS Highlanders (N) won 7 Queens Medals in Canada and many handgun, FClass, Precision Rifle and .22 matches.
Back to question, Circa 1850 for stripping then sanding, then 0000 steel wool, then dark walnut stain. We used Danish Oil over sanded(steel wool) Spar Varnish that produced a durable matte finish on an M40-style build and many use Tru Oil for lustre. Depending on porosity, filler may be appropriate.

Lee Valley has wide selection and good info on the benefits of various finishes and can be helpful, in addition to many online articles.

Best regards,

Peter
