I'm considering an Anschutz 64 MPR for target and benchrest shooting. I know the 54 action is the "Cadillac" but I cannot afford it. I am prepared to pay for match ammo, though. I'd like to hear opinions on the 64 MPR.

Hello grauhanen,

Personally, I would consider the purchasing of a second hand Anschutz Match 54.

Sometime, you could find good deals like this one: http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php/1168128-Anschutz-54-Match-Rifle?highlight=54

Even if you are bad lucky and the chamber throat of your second hand 54 has been destroyed by improper cleaning made by an idiot at some time, a competent gunsmith (I repeat, a competent...) can easily remove the barrel from the action, set it back and re-chamber with a match reamer, make a new crowning and if there are no pitting in the bore, you have a refreshed super accurate barrel ( I know that this is not agreed by all, but it is my personal opinion based on my experience). The barrel of the 54 is press fit an pinned to the action, not threaded. The cost of this operation could be well under the cost of a new barrel blank imported from the US.

Happy Christmas,

I have an MPR & a 54 action model 2007. Both are very accurate & the difference in group size between the two is miniscule.

The 54 is indeed a stronger action but is not required for the .22 rimfire, the trigger is also a little nicer. It would appear that they both use the same barrel & both have stocks that are very comfortable to shoot from the bench.

Don't discount the MPR it is a fine rifle. The 2007 was a special kind of buy, as fine a rifle as it is I would never pay the retail price for that gun. It was bought from a friend & was brand new in the box, unfired. He acquired it for his own use not realizing it was a lefty. I got it for less than half the retail price. I think he came out ok as he is a dealer & got it from someone who had to dispose of their guns very quickly.

I recently picked up an MP R from Nordic, and I have to say I am blown away. I have only fired about 75 shots from it, but so far it is accurate enough to impress me. I've shot mostly Lapua Centre X out of it and can shoot ragged holes at 50-70 yards. Last weekend I wanted to try some Yellow Jackets and a 5 shot group came in at a measured hair below .5" at 70 yards.

I am anxious for some nicer weather so I can do some careful group shooting, and perhaps enter the .5" club challenge. I also think the look of the rifle is second to none with that Monte Carlo stock with the beavertail forend. I dressed mine up with a DIP 25moa extended rail, 54 trigger guard and a nicer bolt knob. The scope on it is a Leupold VXIII 6.5-20 EFR in medium QRW rings.

Don't discount the idea of looking around for a used rifle. I have purchased very clean Match 54s for around $1000, and I purchased an extremely clean 54MSR last fall for $1550 with rings and a cheap scope.
