Hey guys, thought you might want to see my Anschutz CIL 190 makeover I recently completed. I was fortunate to find (with the help of a great CGN'er) a decent condition CIL 190 from a gentleman in Quebec. The rifle arrived to me with the usual dings and dents of 45 years of use, along with almost every part being covered with a shellac of dried oil, cat hair and spider nests. Clearly the rifle hadn't been shot in a long time but given the extremely low price I paid, I wasn't about to complain. None-the-less, it was all cosmetic and I set about to do a makeover. I laboured over the decision to paint the wood or not. My gun safe is full of walnut already, so i decided to make this rifle a tribute to my German heritage and the rifles manufacturing home. All the parts cleaned up beautifully with some elbow grease. The only cost to me was a new rubber eye cup, and the red knobs. On the website where I ordered them it stated they were compatible with the "old silver knobs" so I gave it a shot. Unfortunately the base that the knobs mount to is not tall enough for the set screw to grab, but the diameter and fit is nice and snug, so I just glued the knobs on with super glue. Easily removed if needed.

So here she is, all dressed up and ready to go to the range...

I generally cringe whenever someone paints a walnut stock but I have to say you did a nice job. There's a new picture thread for Annie's etc that I hope gains some traction. Check it out maybe you have something to contribute :)

Might I ask where you sourced out the red annodized adjustment knobs?

I agree too. This was not an easy decision for me. But as mentioned, I have a safe full of finely finished Walnut guns, and because of the price i paid for this one, I decided to have some fun with it. Do we know for sure this stock was originally Walnut? I was able to see the raw wood under the butt plate, and it seemed a bit soft for walnut and looked like "white wood" under the butt plate. It didn't have that greyish brown tone of walnut and dented easily with a fingernail.

How did u manage to get the letters and colours so perfect? Sticker of sorts?

I hand cut the lettering out of adhesive vinyl with an Exacto scalpel. I'm a commercial artist so that comes easy for me. Takes about 10 minutes per word. You could also have them cut by a commercial vinyl cut machine.

Colours are masked and painted with Krylon.

Yes, it was likely a beech wood stock stained to look like walnut. i've encountered this as well when I re-finishished a couple RWS/Diana air guns.

I like it !

I have a CIL 190 too and I can confirm >>> the stock is not made from walnut, my best bet would be beechwood or very similar wood grain...

Update... this gun shoots as good as it looks. I am in awe of the feel of this rifle, it somehow balances and falls into place with such ease, it is like it points itself at the target. I have alot of very nice rimfires, but the Anschutz has now raised the bar very high. I shoot Lapua club and it is very consistent. Groups at 25yds are typically quarter sized with the odd flier. Once I have a bit more practice I'll measure a few of my better rounds. Right now the gun outshoots me by a long shot.

The only issue I have is that once every 10-20 shots, the bolt will slide right out of the receiver while opening the chamber. Need to look into that.
