I am looking at buying an .22 rifle and looking at these two:
Anschutz 1416L D HB Classic 23" .22 LR (LEFT)
Anschutz 64 MPR Multi Purpose .22 LR

What are the differences?

The stocks are obviously different.
The barrel on the MPR is slightly longer and thicker.
Are the actions the same?

I shoot left handed but would give up a LH action for accuracy.
I would be using it for hunting, some target shooting but nothing too serious.

thanks,
Dan

The MPR is actually the 1903 Target barreled action in a multi purpose stock . Compared to the 1416 , the MPR has a different barrel ( choked and grooved for match sights ) , trigger ( 2 stage @ 8oz ) and stock ( with rail ) . The action is the same Match 64 action . I have an MPR and it is simply fantastic . It is not a carry rifle to go hunting with as it's very heavy , although it could be done . But , if accuracy is your goal , it is VERY hard to beat . Mine is set up as a tactical trainer and I am most definitely the limiting factor . 1416 is a hunting rifle , MPR is a target rifle .

The action on both rifles is the same. The heavier barrel on the MPR as well as its stock will lend it to be more amenable off the bench. As HondaVTEC notes, the MPR has an accessory rail and can take a front globe sight -- if that is of interest to you. And for target shooting the MPR trigger is two stage and lighter. The 1416 trigger pull can be reduced with a spring change but it's doubtful that it can be as light as the MPR. On the other hand, the MPR is less well suited for hunting because of its weight and length.

i have an mpr and love it but with a 6x24 scope on it its not going hunting. too heavy but its a great shooter off the bench.

I have the 64 MP R "tactical trainer" and it's a terrific bench gun. I've yet to shoot it prone/off a bipod..but I suspect it would shine in that role too. I would consider my particular rifle a poor choice for hunting or long carries...just too heavy. Laying prone in a gopher patch? We'll see! :)

Work you way up the Annie scale. They sell a 1712 with an 18 inch barrel

Thanks for all the great information.
It doesn't make my decision easier but I think I am leaning toward the MP R.

Hey Dan~give Brad @ Nordic a call, talk it over with him. Very nice, helpful, knowledgeable guy. As for the question itself~I think you should rule-out the MP R if you plan on shooting offhand...ever. My
"Tactical Trainer" variant comes in at over 9lbs, not including the scope/rings/bipod. ( http://www.nordicmarksman.com/64-MP-R-Tactical-Trainer.html ) I know the stock itself is a little beefier than the sporter version, but by less than a pound in terms of weight. That's right up there with something like a varmint-barreled Savage centerfire...which you could probably handle at your LGS. Shoulder a 10lb rifle as though you're taking an offhand shot at a squirrel..I think you'd pass on the idea quickly. For a bench gun, or one shot supported off a bipod...the MP R action is pretty hard to beat. Especially with that 5098 trigger. Wow. :)
