Hey folks;

I'm looking to add a Nagant M1895 to my collection. They've always fascinated me, and ideally I'd be looking for one that qualifies as an Antique in the eyes of the law.

Are there any in Canada that anyone knows about? If not, where would you suggest I start looking to find one and have it imported? Any tips on finding one in good, shootable condition?

One of the qualifications for antique status is that the rifle is non magazine and the Nagant has a magazine. Also, while I have forgotten what the minimum caliber is to qualify as an antique rifle but I am pretty sure that it is over 30 caliber. I don't recall seeing many in gunshows and your best bet might being to watch "Access to Firearms" classified adds as well as of course checking in the milsurp section of our equipment exchange

cheers mooncoon

Might need to brew that morning coffee a bit stronger next time eh? OP meant 1895 Nagant revolver not 1891 Mosin haha ;)

As to the OP, this is probably up with the likes of antique status C96 as you have VERY few made before the cutoff date compared to how many were made post-1897 that are stuck in the restricted category.
Maybe head down to the next annual antique arms show in Vegas? They always have nearly everything you could imagine on the tables down there.

Thank you mooncoon, but I think you're mistaking the Nagant M1895 revolver with the M1891, the rifle. Though I'd also love to have some older mosins too, heh.

Thank you for the advice, I'll have to see if I can have a look. In the mean time, do you know of any Antique firearms dealers I should be contacting? I've already sent an email off to OldGunsCanada about them and was told they haven't had one in yet, but they'll keep their eyes open for me.

Most of the dealers would be stateside, Collectors Firearms in Texas and Simpson Ltd in Illinois are 2 of the bigger ones but carry a fairly high premium on top of the exchange rate.
Some others to look with I'd suggest Handguns of the World, horstheld or 1898and-b4 for some oddball stuff.

Fantastic, thank you, I'll look into these dealers. Hopefully I can find what I'm after at a reasonable price.

I’ve only ever seen one. It was in a collection in bridgewater Nova Scotia about 15 years ago. Was from an early run made by Leon Nagant.

I don't know if you read this article, http://7.62x54r.net/MosinID/MosinRareNagant.htm Production in russia started in 1898, from 1895 to 1898 they were made in Liege, Belgium about 20 000 were delivered to russia.

The 20000 delivered would be the military contract guns. Liege also made them for commercial sales and these are much more available and tend to be in a better shape.

I have one that i got a while ago on the EE from a very kind gunnut. They are around but ive only seen one for sale in canada. They were made in Belgium for A Russian contract and are usually marked on the left side: L.Nagant Brevete Liege (year). Ive read around 50,000 were produced but who knows how many have survived until now. As such the price is most likely very expensive.
