Looking at the definition of antique firearms there seems to be a little bit if a grey area (maybe just not well explained) on the other hand maybe im just not understanding it completely. If a 31cal cap and ball pistol was made in the 1860's and the barrel length is 3 1/2 " is it considered an antique or does the barrel length make it prohibitted?

Its an antique. Because it uses loose powder and ball, calibre and barrel length are irrelevant. One of the little S&W .22 short revolvers from the 1860s, is prohib. A similar Smith in .32 rf is antique.

how bout an 1896 mauser broom handle? the 9mm para is not one of the listed cartridges.

If you can actually find a '96 Broomhandle that was manufactured before 1898 you'll be (relatively) rich. Proving d.o.m. can be dicey too, and "I think it's antique just ain't good enough.

The danger with the broom handle dating is that new serial number runs were often started for batches produced for different clients. You can find realtively late production arms with very low serial numbers.

As for the market, like Rodagra says the market is pricey. A canadian dealer recently sold one in exc cond for 5 gs a while ago and a Gunsmith in washington sold a lined rebuild antique last winter for 3500USD.

A pre-97 cone-hammer Broomhandle C96 in 7.63 is an antique, and it's also a rare collectible worth several thousand dollars regardless of its antique status. Good luck finding and affording one.

Here's another one. 32 rimfire 4 shot Remington Elliot. made 1863-1888. now that we know that barrel length isnt an issue, what about the .32cal issue?

u need a PAL for all ammunition.
Its antique if its pre 1898 and in a caliblre thats not excluded on 'the list'.
BBL doesnt matter.

Perhaps one of these days we can sticky the SOR 98 464 for everyone to see the moment they come into the Antiques board

:)

But in the mean time:
