I was offered as a gift a revolver that I am told is a Colt New House. It was manufactured in 1881 and is stamped 38 cal. It looks like a nickel finished metal with black plastic(bakelite?) grips stamped COLT. On the barrel is stamped Pat Sept 15 1874. The serial # dates manufacture to 1881. It is a single action with a solid frame. You have to set the hammer in the safe position to be able to flip a cylinder cover to one side to load a round into the cylinder. Does this revolver fall into antique class? I find the RCMP Firearms site a bit tough to decipher and I do not want to accept this gift if it is not an antique class as I am not interested in owning a restricted firearm.

38 cal New House were 38lc with everything that entails. I'm not going to talk about illegal approaches to this but if you decide you want to legalize it and sell it, I can give you a contact for a collector in the Czech Republic who buys guns like this and exports them out of Canada...

Or you can reach out to Switzer's - given that they were selling prohibited handguns with a stipulation that they are for export or deactivation only (no 12.6 status) I believe they know what to do, but chances are it will be the same buyer buying in the end...

Either way, I don't believe there is a legal way for you to keep it. Sorry. At this point it can either be surrendered for destruction, deactivated or sold for export. If by some miracle someone finds it was registered before and you have 12.6 on your license then you may be able to keep it... if you do it before c-21 comes into effect.

It appears that it does not qualify for antique status. It would be 12-6 prohibited. The folks who own it will have to decide what they wish to do. IF it is registered, it is transferable like any other 12-6.

Thanks for all the replies. Research showed it is a 38LC and a 12-6 class firearm so I had to decline the offer to own it as I have neither an RPAL or 12.6 classification. Shame as it's a pretty cool looking piece to put in a collection and in mint condition. Not a mark on it. Oh well...

You need a exporter , a restricted antique, it should be one or the other , not both.
US and Canadian antique are not always the same thing.

Maybe I should clarify. It's an antique in both Canada and the US. It's restricted here due to caliber (.44-40). It's just an antique status in the US. since they don't have the asinine "restrictions" we labour under.
